Helpful Information

Planners – They will be coming home DAILY to be signed off on by a parent.  An initial in the little box next to the entry is fine.  Your child will be writing their own sentences in the next few weeks (we’ll brainstorm ideas of what we did each day, but they’ll pick and write their own idea down).  Be sure to review them for capitalization, sentence structure, punctuation and spelling.  Go over any errors WITH your child.  If it is not written neatly have them fix it.   Their spelling words for the week will be in their planner under words for the week – more information will follow in the coming weeks about their spelling words.  Each weekend their planners will come home with them.  They are expected to write a short entry (about something they did) for each weekend day.  I will only be looking at their planners once a week on a rotating schedule so your assistance in reviewing it with your child is appreciated.

Daily reading – Your child should be reading a minimum of 20 minutes a day.  There is a home-school reading bag that will be coming home daily with a book that they independently pick out from our classroom library.  They can read the whole book, a portion of the book (depending on the size) or it can be something you do with them.  In the first few weeks we’ll be reviewing how to select just right books for independent reading so the book selection should improve in the future.  If they are reading something at home that they would like to bring to school and read during independent reading workshop time that is fine with me as long as it is a just right book for them.  In their take home folder there will be a reading log that I am using to track their read at home minutes daily.  Please complete it each night and sign it!  I do check this daily.

Math links – This year the math links (homework) need to be completed and returned to school the NEXT DAY.  I do this to help the students prepare for 3^rd grade when the homework load increases and the expectations are greater.  I will not be sending them home corrected, but I will be reviewing them.  Home links should be review for your child.  If you find that your child had a hard time and needs a lot of assistance with their math homework please put a note on the home link “with help” so I can be sure to review the topic with them.

Birthdays – In order to meet our wellness guidelines, 2^nd grade birthdays will be celebrated in a special way in our classroom.  Please refrain from sending in any birthday treats to school.  I will be sure to celebrate the summer birthdays at some point too!

8:25 students start to arrive

8:45 school starts

11:20 lunch

12:35 recess

1:10 special

3:20 dismissal

If you are dropping your child off at school please have them here by 8:30 as there is morning work that they do and it is a time that they can chat with their friends before the day starts.
