CERAMICS 1
QUARTER 1

*Students will complete introductory procedures and become aquainted with assessment, safety, and studio maintanance.


*Students will view a cultural video that demonstrates a primitive method of construction and firing, with elegant results.


*Students will work in groups to create a cultural collage that contrast clay with other sculptural materials.


*Students may have the opportunity to create a raku tea bowl and experience the raku firing process. This activity is pending a grant for a raku artist through the RI Council on the Arts


*Students will complete a low relief (Ba-relief) sculpture that tells a story from personal experience.
(This is a validated task and will include research homework and reflection)

HOMEWORK: (This is the research for the validated task)
Research an example of low-relief sculpture that has been used to relay information. This can be from any place or time in history. Choose an artwork that you find interesting.
-Provide an example.
-Describe the art work.
-What are the materials?
-What do you find interesting or appealing about this piece?
-What is the story, myth,belief or piece of history being told?
-Why was it created, or how was it used?
-What culture or artist is it associated with?
-Provide information about the artist or culture.
-What time and place in history?


*Students will create a functional piece of pottery which incorporates all 3 hand-building techniques (pinch pot, slab and coil). They should also include a decorative element that has a personal symbolic meaning or visual story.
(This is a validated task and will include research homework and reflaetion according to CHS format)

HOMEWORK
Research functional pottery from your own cultural barkground. Select an example from any culture and compare the two. The examples you choose can be from any time in history.
-Provide an example and summary of each.
-What is the cultures or artists?
-Describe the art works.
-What are the materials?
-What do you find interesting or appealing about them?
-How are they similar?
-How are they different?
-What is your overall critique of the 2 works of functional potter?

Students will also be working on the potter's wheel this quarter. It is a fun, but messy experience


QUARTER 2
*Students will complete a textured dragon inspired by examples from eastern and western cultures. Their dragon should also give attention to environment and expression (this is a validated task).

HOMEWORK:
Choose a mythological creature from the index provided to you. Research the creature, myth, purpose and culture. Provide an visual example of the and summary.
Compare this creature to the eastern and western dragon.


*Students will create a figurative sculpture that 'catches a moment in time' from the students own experience. Attention must be give to posture and expression. Interaction with objects, other figures, animals and aspects of the environment will help to tell the tale.(this assignment is formatted as a validated task)

HOMEWORK:
Research and example of figure sculpture from any point in time.
Provide:
-a visual example
-information about the arist or culture
-time it was created
-intention of the artist
-function or purpose
-materials and process
-your interpretation and response to the chosen sculpture


*Students will experiment with the slip casting process. They should complete 2 molds for credit. Assessment will be based on the quality of the glaze, the understanding of the process, and the handling of the greenware.


*Students will create a ceramic food sculpture. This assignment is in conjunction with a 'service learning' grant. Students will test examples of food from various local food-related businesses. Their sculptures will be displayed in the community. As a final project, students will independently use all their acquired skills to create a successful work of art.

HOMEWORK:
Research any form of contemporary art.
Provide:
-a visual example
-information about the artist (location, personal history)
-function of sculpture chosen
-materials used
-personal opinion

CERAMICS 2
QUARTER 1

*Students will information , techniques and terminology from Ceramics 1

*students will design a cardboard template that can be impressed into terracotta clay. They will create at least 2 'stepping stones' with personal images. One will be left to the school for thegazebo garden (this is part of a service learning grant) The other will be taken home.

HOMEWORK:
Research low relief sculpture from any culture or artist that is a decorative addition to a garden.
-find an example
-describe the image
-what do you like about it
-what is the technical process through which it was made
-what material is it made from
-who is the artist or what is the culture

*Students will participate in a carousel activity regarding radial tile design. Their group designs have been scanned, manipulated in various positions and analyzed in terms of radial design. The designs were also assessed for weaknesses, allowing students to identify areas of potential concern. An emphasis on the importance of precise measurements was realized.
*Students have created a design for a template, impressed 4 tiles from the templet, dried and refined the tiles. They are in the process of glazing and assessing their tiles.
*Students will create a drawing (1 or 2 point perspective, Computer generated, or enhance an exhisting real estate drawing) that demonstrates the application of the tiles.
This is a validarted task.
(Students from previous classes have won Art Awards in design for their accomplishments)

HOMEWORK:
Research examples of the use of tiles. You may select a direction from the list of cultures on the list provided for you, or choose a topic of your own.

Students are working on a culturally inspired architectural sculpture. This sculture should contain elements of the envirments and indications of inhabitence.

HOMEWORK
*Research styles of architecture. Choose a culture that inspires you and:
-ptovide a sample of the architecture
-describe the style and materials
-explain the environment
-provide information about the culture (or architect), the time in which it was constructed, and the purpose of the structure
-include your personal opinion about the example chosen

*Students will have the oportunity to develop their skills with the potter's wheel

QUARTER 2

*Inspired by examples of ritual containers, students will create a personalized 'ritual' container. Care will be taken with the precision fitting of the lid to the container. The use of a flange is necessary in order to secure the lid in place. Low relief sculptural additions are required to elude to the personal significance and function of the piece. This is a validated task)

HOMEWORK
Research any example of ritual containers (any time in history)
-provide a visual example.
-write a summary of information regarding the chosen work of art. Include:
*time
*place
*artist or culture
*use of container in ritual
*materials
*techniques used
*personal opinion about the chosen art work


*Students will create a ceramic food sculpture that appears as an over abundance or spill of food. Attention must be given to the details which would trick the viewer's eyes, believing in the need for 'clean up.' This assignment is in collaboration with a service learning grant. The art work will be displayed at local food-related businesses, and we will be able to purchase examples of the food. This assignment is being formatted as a validated task)

HOMEWORK
Research any form of contemporary ceramic art (functional or sculptural)
-provide a visual example of the chosen work
-information about the artist (place, country, style, technique)
-artist's attitude towards his work and intention
-personal opinion about the chosen work of art (what do you like or dislike about it)

*Students will slip cast two pieces. They will experiment witl techniques in glaze application and the addition of sculptural elements to the leatherhard slip cast piece.

*Students will create a ceramic self portrait which will be completed as part of the final exam.

HOMEWORK
Research an example of portrait sculpture from any time in history

*Time permitting, student will have the opportunity to creat beads, amulets or small sculpture with Egyptian paste.
