Welcome to the Holy Cross Music room for 2017-18.

Over the past two summers, I have been immersing myself in the musical teaching approach founded by Zoltan Kodaly, who was this year recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for his contribution to our Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The music classroom at Holy Cross is inspired both by his work - centered around the human voice and the roots of our musical heritage in folk music - and Maria Montessori's work, which proposes the creation of an environment which draws out the "inner teacher" in each child, inviting discoveries based on their own needs and timing. From grades 1-5, most classes have a longer music time once a cycle for doing independent work, as well as a shorter one which is more teacher-directed. It is delightful to witness the enthusiasm with which they pursue their goals! The music room also includes a few spiritual works in the Montessori tradition, from the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, which form part of the independent work time.

"There is no complete spiritual life without music, for the human soul has regions which can only be illuminated by music."
