Thank you for donating can food items for the Food Bank on Spirit Day! You received a weekly progress report in your child’s folder on Friday. Please sign it and return it on Monday. Just a reminder, please check your child’s folder daily and take out the papers.

It is hard to believe midterm for this quarter is on Wednesday. The last day of the quarter is Friday, October 16th. I will send home a list of skills your child will be assessed on for first quarter . Your child will need to know their home phone number or one parent’s cell phone number and address. It would be helpful if you would help your child learn these two skills. Your child will be assessed on tying shoes at the end of the school year.

We had a great first week of school! I am getting to know the students and they are learning the expectations in kindergarten. We have mostly focused on learning the rules and expectations this week. The students are enjoying learning some of the expectations through an app called Sock Puppets. Next week we will hopefully get in more of a routine with each day.

The students attended all the special classes except for counseling during the first week.  They even went to church on Friday for the all school mass! I was very proud of how well they behaved considering it was the first mass as a class! We have practice making the sign of the cross, saying the Daily Prayer and the Blessing before Meals.

On the first day of school, the students colored a small paper book about the five rules in class. The five rules will be used by each teacher in the whole school. The rule book was sent home this week. Please have your child tell you the rules. My personal favorite is rule number 5!

We have been really focusing on the cafeteria behaviors. The students made a lunch box with a list of good and bad choices to use in the cafeteria. I really want the kids to focus on the good choices. I sent the lunch box home on Thursday. Please review the expectations with your child over the weekend.

The air conditioner works a little too well in my class, so please send your child’s OLLIS fleece to school so they may wear it in the class. Please make sure your child’s name is on the fleece and let your child know where his/her name is located on the fleece. I have told the kids to look for their name before they put the fleece in their backpack at the end of the day.

In your child’s green folder, I sent home a red information sheet about the fall fundraiser starting on Friday, October 9th. Please return the part of the form with your child’s T-shirt size before Friday, September 4th. The Read-A-Thon committee is also looking for more volunteers. If you would like to help with the Read-A-Thon, there is a meeting in the OLLIS library on Thursday, August 27th at 6:00pm or you may contact Monica Korba. ([email protected])

A Sneak Peek into the Week: Skills we will focus on with each subject.

We will start our letter homework this week. The first letter is Ll.  We use Letter People puppets to teach each letter. The letter person’s name for the letter Ll, is Mr. Longest Laugh. On Monday, I will show the kids how to complete the letter page homework. I gave you a sample page with directions in the packet you picked up on the supply drop off day. It has four boxes on the page. The first box, your child will write their name and the date. Below the date, your child will write the uppercase and lowercase L. Your child will think of 3 objects that start with the letter L. He or she will draw, color and label each object. One object per box. You will have the homework sheet on Monday and it will be due on Thursday.

Religion- Introduction to the Bible, prayer, priest, church and the church year.

Reading- letter recognition and sounds, introduce words I, see, can and many other words in daily reading and writing. Recognizing names of classmates.

Writing- Introduction of writing- drawing a picture then labeling the picture or writing a sentence about the picture. Will learn about chopping (sounding) out words and spacing words apart in a sentence.

Math- Use manipulatives to sort by color, size and shape.

Science- Reviewing the outer body parts.

Social Studies- Continue to go over rules/expectations and learning about our friends in class.

To all my volunteers who want to volunteer weekly or every other week, I am going to take one more week to get my daily routine adjusted before I start to schedule you as a volunteer. If you have a day and time which works best for you, please email me the times. I already have two parents pulling the pages from the religion and math books! Thank you Gretchen Siebert and Tracy Elsenraat!

Please call or email me if you have any questions or concerns about school.

Have a super week!
