WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF READING

SPONSORED BY MS BETTY SPRAGG, Ed.S, NBCT
Room 218

I am your child’s teacher for the 2008-2009. I have 23 years of teaching experience and have been at Rothschild Middle School for 10 years. I am certified in both Special Education and Middle Grades Education. My educational achievements include: B.A. in Psychology, M.Ed. in Special Education, Ed.S in Middle Grades Education and I have achieved National Board Certification as an Exceptional Needs Specialist.

Parents and supporters of student literacy:

Your child will be introduced to a reading curriculum that emphasizes developing students’ basic reading and reading comprehension skills. I will use the Benchmark Reading Instruction Program, designed by Irene W. Gaskins, Ed.D. This is a proven researched based program designed for struggling readers. For further information on this program, visit its website: http://www.benchmark.org.

We have started these 9 weeks with lessons and activities that develop:
1. phonemic awareness ( the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate sounds of letters),
2. alphabetical principles (using sounds and letters to form words,
3. vocabulary (understanding and using words),
4. fluency (reading effortlessly), and
5. comprehension skills (understanding what is read).

GPS Standards for reading grade levels 6-8 are:

ELAR1 The student demonstrates comprehension and shows evidence of a warranted and responsible explanation of a variety of literary and informational texts.

ELAR2 The student understands and acquires new vocabulary and uses it correctly in reading and writing.

ELAR3 The student reads aloud, accurately (in the range of 95%)familiar material in a way that makes meaning clear to listeners.

ELARC1 The student reads a minimum of 25 grade-level appropriate books or the equivalent of 1 million words from a variety of subjects.

I am looking forward to great things from your child. I expect all students to make some improvement in their reading ability. To that end, your child and I will need your help. Please have your child read aloud to you each day for a minimum of 15 minutes. They should also read silently for 15 minutes for a total of 30 minutes each day. Please sign the reading log to verify that they have accomplished this task. I will also support your child’s efforts to read 1,000,000 words this year. Attendance is critical as many activities involve oral participation.

Grading Scale:
Classwork 40
Reading Logs 20%
Class Participation 30%
Book Report 10%

We will cover percents, ratios, and positive and negative integers.

Your child will work independently in a computer assisted instruction program from Pearson Learning called SuccessMaker.
