 6th Grade Reading

            Students are completing a unit on Fairy Tales, Myths and Legends. 

 

GPS Standards:

 

ELA6R1 The student demonstrates comprehension and shows evidence of a warranted and responsible explanation of a variety of literary and informational texts.

ELA6R2 The student understands and acquires new vocabulary and uses it correctly in reading and writing.

ELA6R3 The student reads aloud, accurately (in the range of 95%), familiar

material in a variety of genres, in a way that makes meaning clear to listeners.

 

We are using some new equipment in the classroom to hemp students develop reading fluency, track words, and improve comprehension. Students have learned to use the KURZWEIL Reader. Using a computer and scanner, students can read any printed materials.   If you would like see the Kurzweil demonstrated, please call or email. Students also used the computer to create a Story Pyramid of a myth read in class.

 

 7th Grade Reading  - We are reading an historical novel

ELA7RC4 The student establishes a context for information acquired by reading

across subject areas.

 

Today we complete a novel called The Breaker Boys by Pat Hughes. This is a story of a 12 year old boy, Nathan, whose family owns a coal mine. Nathan has no friends and is constant trouble at home. Nathan meets a boy his age, Johnny, who is a coal miner’s son. The two forge a strong bond through difficult times.

 

Students learned what life was like in 1897, what it was like to live in a company town, child labor, and how unions were formed.  Ask them to share the story with you. We used the Kurzweil Reader to help us complete this story.  Your child may be able to earn up to 8 Accelerated Reader points by passing the test.

 

 

 

8th Grade Reading  - We are improving our comprehension skills by Interpreting Figurative Language ( metaphors, similes, and idioms)

Eighth grade students are learning how to interpret meaning in literature by studying metaphors, similes, and idioms.  Students are using the computer lab to create PowerPoint slides to represent idioms, similes, and metaphors.  If you remember some of the “old sayings” you learned growing up, such as, ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’,  share them with your child to help them remember idioms and figurative language. 7th Grade Math Skills  We are continuing to strengthen are basic computation skills.

 

 GPS Standards

 

M7N1. Students will understand the meaning of positive and negative rational

numbers and use them in computation.

M7P4. Students will make connections among mathematical ideas and to other

 

Math Skill students are working with solving problems using fractions decimals and percents. We are learning to analyze a word problem in steps in order to successfully compute the answer. Your child will have the opportunity to teach a problem solution to the entire class. We are continuing to use the computer lab to work individually on skills. We are using the Odyssey program.
