Flashcards for Mrs. Louann Landsberg

 Chemistry  January, 2012

Molecule- the smallest particle of a compound; made of one or more atoms

Atom- The building block of all matter

Element- One of 100 natural substances that are the basic building blocks of matter

Electron- A particle with a negative charge

Neutron- a non-charged particle found in the nucleus of an atom

Atomic Mass #- equal to the number of protons + the # of neutrons in an atom

Atomic #- the # that is equal to the number of protons and electrons in an atom

Compound- A substance made of two or more elements combined chemically

Solution- A homogeneous (the same throughout) mixture of 2 or more substances

Solute- A substance that dissolves   ex. ice tea powder

Solvent- The substance that does the dissolving  ex. water

Saturated- Holding as much as possible ex. a sponge in water

Dilute- Does not have as much solute as the solvent can hold

Solubility- How much of a solute dissolves in a solvent

Chemical Reaction- Process that involves changes in the structure of atoms or molecules

Mixture- A substance consisting of 2+ substances mixed together without any bonding

Similarity between a Mixture and a Solution is both are made of 2 or more substances

Relationship between a Solution and A Mixture is a solution is a type of mixture
