Upcoming Events

Welcome to Mrs. Florence Johnson's 10th grade World Literature page for 2019-2020 at Lakeside High School.

Please sign up to be notified when I update this page.

My email is [email protected]  (There is an underline before and after the middle initial c.)

The syllabus, supply list, book list, and classroom procedures will be available in attached files. Organize your notebook with the following dividers: Syllabus/Rules, Reading/Lit, Writing, Grammar, Vocabulary.

March 11 -- This is no longer our class website. In case of school closings, we will stay in touch by using edmodo.com. If you have not yet joined the class, use the class code rjgsvi ro join World Lit (one class site for all periods).

Jan 10 - OUr class website is now on edmodo.com. However, some of you are having trouble with that, so I have put the Night powerpoint with openers and journal prompts, in the files on this site as well. The link to the text of Night is in links.

Oct 3 -- Today I introduced our argument unit. If you missed class, please review the PowerPoint "Introduction to Argument" in the files. We watched short videos about each of the three topic choices. These topics are listed, along with background articles, in the file titled "Background Articles for Argument Topics." Tomorrow we will begin research in class. Please bring your Chromebooks. If you miss class tomorrow, select and analyze two articles related to your chosen topic. Fill out the "Article Analysis Form" on each.

Sept. 26 -- Please note that the unit test date has been changed to October 2. A list of what to study will be provided tomorrow. It is attached in the files.

Sept 22 -- If you missed the vocabulary quiz on Friday, please see me a.s.a.p., preferably before school on Monday. We will finish reading The Epic of Gilgamesh on Monday and move on to learn about more epic heroes: Rama (India) and Sundiata (Mali). We are working towards a unit test on Tuesday, Oct 1 (changed to Oct 2)

Sept. 12 -- I have changed my page settings, so you should now be able to scroll down to find the files in Downloads (no more tabs for now). I just added the openers that we have used this week in case you missed something.

Sept 9 -- I am sorry if you have been unable to use the file tab above to get to the files. I have just sent an inquiry to new.schoolnotes. I hope it will be fixed soon. In the meantime, if you need something, email me, and I will try to send the file directly to you.

Sept 4 -- I am happy to say that only three people missed the test; thanks for your good attendance today. Those who missed should see me a.s.a.p about making up the test; tomorrow (Thursday) and Monday are options. It will take 50 minutes.

Sept 3 -- Your test is tomorrow. I put the review questions that were used in class today in the files. The PowerPoint on archetypes vs. stereotypes is also in the files.

Aug 30 -- It was great to see many parents last night! Yesterday a creative project was assigned. Students have a choice: "Metaphorical Me" (photo plus paragraph) or "Where I'm From" (poem). Instructions for each choice are in the files. Rubrics are in the same file with the "Metaphorical Me" instructions. The project is due September 9. The results may be suitable for submission to the PTSA Reflections contest as well (theme "Look Within"). The PTSA newsletter has information on this contest, and I have information posted in class.

Aug 27 -- See calendar for updates. We are working towards a test on Sept 4. I look forward to meeting parents on the evening of August 29.

Aug 23 -- Happy Friday! Today is our last day with the laptop carts for MAP testing and the last day that we will devote class time to this round of MAP testing. Students who missed a test or need to finish the tests should arrange to come before or after school or during guided study time, with a Chromebook if possible.

Aug. 16 -- I have just been told that we must do MAP testing next week. I will try to work as much as I can of our regular lessons around the testing. We will be using school-provided laptops since the Chromebooks have not yet been distributed. It looks like distribution for sophomores will be next Thursday. MAP test are difficult to make up, so please be present every day.

Aug. 15 -- Don't forget to have your Vocabulary and Openers sheet ready to turn in tomorrow. Do the three boxes on the back before class as well as the definitions and sentences on the front. Remember that the form is in the files if you want to download it and type. I have also attached the PowerPoint with the openers for this week.

New students in 3rd period: Welcome! Please do the tasks assigned, and bring back the papers in the folder: Signed Syllabus (both sides); Get-to-Know-You Questionnaire (use pen and fill it up); Procedures quiz (open notes); Sagbata and Sogbo analysis. If you can get it all done by tomorrow, you will receive an ELA buck!

Aug. 7 -- The week is going well! Remember that you will have a quiz on classroom procedures tomorrow. If you have lost the information, the document is in the files (see tab above). Also remember that you have an essay due Monday (the Reader's Autobiography).
