Dear Parents,
Welcome to a new school year! I am happy to be your child's 3rd grade teacher! I am also looking forward to greeting familiar faces from last year and welcoming new St. Barnabas students to our third grade classroom. Let's all work together for a wonderful school year!
I would like to take this opportunity to briefly cover some areas of interest that will be helpful to you and your child for a successful school year.

Our school theme this year is "I Am Third." It is our call ato be disciples of Christ by demonstrating love and respect for one another. By using the teachings of our shared Christian faith, we will further help students to know God and to serve God by caring others, specifically practicing "I AM Third": Jesus, Others, Yourself. By putting God and others before us, we add more joy into our lives.

BEHAVIOR - As it is every year, one of our most important goals is to become more kind and respectful to each other. I do not expect the children to be best friends with everyone, however I do expect them to treat each other with kindness and respect. Nice words only - that's our goal! The good manners your child learns at home will be expected to carry over into our classroom.

Misbehavior, in its various forms, (not paying attention, arguing, disrespectful, disruptive behavior, etc.) takes valuable instruction time away from all students when a lesson is interrupted for discipline. The children in my classroom are aware of the behavior I expect from them. Inappropriate behavior will be addressed. Verbal warnings will be given for inappropriate behavior. If the behavior continues a the student will either receive a parent notification or write a note to their parents explaining their misconduct. Either of these will need to be signed with a parent's signature and returned the next day. For serious infractions of classroom/school rules, a trip to the Principal's office and/or a detention may be needed. A detention slip must also be signed by a parent and returned the next day. I am hopeful that this last step won't be necessary because Room 107 will be filled with happy, eager-to-learn, well-behaved children! Please see Parent/Student Handbook for details.

HOMEWORK - I expect homework to be done neatly and handed in on time. This is where responsibility comes in, and it is stressed daily in my classroom. Homework is a time to review the skills/lessons that were presented during the school day. Although many homework assignments will not be graded, all will be checked in and reviewed together as a class. At this time, any questions the students may have had will be addressed. Routinely not completing homework could adversely affect a student's grade and a student's learning of the material. An exception will be made for illness or family emergency, as long as I have a note in the morning explaining why the homework was not completed. When you call the office to report your child's absence, please let them know if there is a sibling or a neighbor that could bring the work home. You may also pick up the work from the shelf outside the office.  A homework notification slip will be sent home for missing/late homework. This notification requires a parent signature along with the missing homework, and should be returned the next day.

A few helpful homework tips:

1. If necessary, read the directions to him/her carefully.

2. Do one or two examples together to get your child started.

3. Be close by if your child needs more assistance, but PLEASE DO NOT DO THEIR HOMEWORK FOR THEM. If there is still confusion about an assignment, please write me a short note, and I will do my best to clarify the assignment.

ASSIGNMENT NOTEBOOK - Even though homework, tests, and projects will be posted on Schoolnotes, students are still expected to fill out their assignment notebooks daily. Assignments are written on the board and reviewed before the end of the day. Please check your child's notebook daily.

SUPPLIES - Please ask your child frequently throughout the school year if they need more paper, pencils, glue, etc. A fair amount of instruction time is wasted when children do not come to school prepared. It is a good idea to take advantage of the back to school sales and keep an extra set of supplies at home for homework and projects.

GRADED WORK/POWERSCHOOL -  I do not have a particular day to send home graded work. I send it home as soon as I correct it and enter the score into Powerschool, which is usually within a day or two from when the work was handed in (often on the same day!). Please check Powerschool frequently.

GRADING SCALE - Tests/Quizzes - 50-100 points each  Class Work - 1-20 points
Homework - 1-10 points each  Project/Papers - 25-50 points

HANDWRITING - Nearly all school work will be done in pencil and on loose leaf paper for most subjects.
Handwriting practice work will be done on writing tablet paper and in the handwriting practice book. We will begin learning cursive writing after Christmas.

MISCELLANEOUS: When the school permits, water bottles will be allowed as long as the students take care to protect their schoolbooks, desks, and materials from damage. Please be sure that your child eats a healthy breakfast in the morning. Lunch is not until 11:05 and there are no snack breaks.

BIRTHDAYS - Due to the number of students that have serious food allergies, we will be continuing with non-edible treats. Birthdays will be celebrated in the homeroom. The birthday child may pass out his/her non-edible treat to share with their class. If an edible treat is brought to school, it will be sent home to ensure the well-being of all of our students. I truly appreciate your cooperation with this important safeguard for our children. Summer birthdays will be celebrated towards the end of the school year. Currently we have 26 students in our classroom.
