Pre-AP ENGLISH II

 

Week of Jan. 5th-9th

 

Monday 5th

Objective

The students will learn and utilize new words.

Teacher Activities

The teacher will hand out vocabulary terms to students and preview the Poetry Unit.

Student Activities

The students will write the definitions, write one original sentence for each word, and write one POEM using all words.

The teacher will hand out copies of TPCASTT and preview in class. A poem will be analyzed using this method (for practice). The teacher will model this practice poem.

Student Activities

The students will complete Cornell Notes on TPCASTT and will analyze (for practice) a poem chosen by the teacher.

Wednesday 7th

Objective

The students will analyze a poem.

The teacher will complete a TPCASTT with the students using a poem from the packet.

The students will begin a TPCASTT on the poem “Courage” by Anne Sexton (out of the packet). Focus on denotation, connotation, and figurative language.

The teacher will guide a class discussion on the Tragic Figure in Greek plays.  (graphic organizer, SOAPSTone)

Student Activities

The students will discuss and complete “Who’s the Tragic Figure” and Tragic Figure—A Different View”….include Height, Hamartia, Suffering, and Catharsis and discuss which characters fit these criteria. The students will also complete, orally, a SOAPSTone.

Wednesday 12th

Objective

The students will demonstrate understanding of the themes of a work.

Teacher Activities

The teacher will lead a discussion on the themes of Antigone. 

Student Activities

The students will discuss the major themes of the play and take Cornell Notes on the discussion. Themes include family loyalty vs. law, the consequences of hubris (pride), and making the right decisions for oneself, among others.

The students will brainstorm their own opinions and ideas and provide support for those opinions.

The students will understand characteristics of Greek theater and Tragedy.

Teacher Activities

The teacher will guide students in discussing key elements of Greek theater (Tragic Hero, Hamartia, Suffering, Catharsis..etc.) and apply these elements to the play.

Student Activities

The students will discuss elements of Greek writing in detail while applying these to the play.  The students will finish reading through Scene 5 (end of play).

The students will synthesize thematic elements of a Greek tragedy.

The students will discuss and write an essay on the major themes of the play.  The essay will consist of a 2 pg. discussion on what they’ve learned through reading the play, with a  focus on topic sentences, supporting details, and conclusion.

The teacher will preview the play Antigone, go over main characters and plot. The teacher will review making predictions in the text, characters, conflict, and plot.

Student Activities

The students will preview the play, begin reading, and make predictions on the plot while reading.  They will also begin taking notes on the two main characters in the story, and become familiar with the main conflict of the story. Reading Prologue through Scene Two pgs 670-682
