ENGLISH II - Springboard

 

Week of January 5th, 2009

 

Monday Jan. 5th

Objective

The students will learn and utilize new poetry terms

Teacher Activities

The teacher will hand out vocabulary terms to students and preview the Poetry Unit.

Student Activities

The students will write the definitions, write one original sentence for each word, and write one POEM using all words.

The students will become familiar with an analysis method.

Teacher Activities

The teacher will hand out copies of TPCASTT and preview in class. A poem will be analyzed using this method (for practice). The teacher will model this practice poem.

Student Activities

The students will complete Cornell Notes on TPCASTT and will analyze (for practice) a poem chosen by the teacher.

Wednesday Jan. 7th

Objective

To compare two poems and an excerpt from Things Fall Apart

Teacher SB pages 268-272. Break students into three groups for this activity.

Group one will read the excerpt from TFA  and answer the questions, group two will read poem number one and answer the questions, and group three will read poem number two and answer the questions

Objective

The students will reflect on the effect of Okonkwo’s violence.

The students will explore culture and categorize cultural components.  They will work collaboratively to produce an artistic representation of cultural components.

Friday, November 21

Objective

The students will assess knowledge of new vocabulary.  The student will analyze a character in a novel, visualize a character, and make inferences/predictions based on textual evidence.

Teacher Activities

The teacher will assign vocabulary quiz.  The teacher will guide the students through a READ ALOUD of the first three paragraphs of Things Fall Apart, and assign SB TE pg. 224, ST pg. 153, following the directions in SB TE pg. 223.

Student Activities

The students will take vocabulary quiz.  The students will READ ALOUD the first three paragraphs of Things Fall Apart.  They will fill out the graphic organizer in SB TE pg. 224, ST pg. 153.  They will complete the writing assignment from the bottom of SB ST pg. 153.

The students will demonstrate understanding of the themes of a work.

The teacher will lead a discussion on the themes of Antigone.

The students will discuss the major themes of the play and take Cornell Notes on the discussion. Themes include family loyalty vs. law, the consequences of hubris (pride), and making the right decisions for oneself, among others.

Thursday, November 13

Objective

The students will become familiar with new allusions.  The students will brainstorm their own opinions and ideas and provide support for those opinions.

The teacher will introduce allusions 16-17.  The teacher will hand out the Quotes Essay papers and give instructions on the writing.

Student Activities

The students will thoroughly explain each quote by giving supporting details and citing evidence from the text.
