Read and summarize the assigned section of “The Story of the Times” on pp. 198-203.  Teach the rest of the class about the section your group studied.  Take Cornell Notes on the Renaissance .

 Discuss word origins and roots.

Student Activities

Divide into two groups.  Look up either definitions or synonyms and antonyms.  Then pair with someone from the other group to complete vocabulary notes.  Write a compound sentence for each new vocabulary word.

 Sentences and notes will be checked for classwork grades.

 After writing a journal entry, students should narrow down interests and decide on a novel to read independently.  Read together the poem “Abandoned Farmhouse,” and discuss “niches.”  Have students decide on their niche and use the format of the poem to change details to fit.

 Teach students how to fold “houses” out of paper to create their niche.  Reread “Abandoned Farmhouse” and guide students through the rewriting process.

 Students model a new original poem after “Abandoned Farmhouse,” describing their niche and the signs that tell about it/them.  Have students decorate their folded paper “niche” and write their new poem on the back.
