COMPUTER HQ
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Our new computers DO NOT HAVE OFFICE 2007. (CPS has not approved it for schools.) If you are working in Office 2007 and want to bring it to school, you must do one important step before you save. Scroll down to the bottom of this screen and I have typed written directions OR on our homepage, left side, click on school forms. I have added a link called "How to save in Office 2007" with screen shots to help. You must do this in all programs in Office 2007.

*Grades 6-7-8 will be expected to have flash drives. This is a requirement for these grades. Come prepared for class!
*Grades 5-6 have been issued their own protected usernames and passwords. These are generated by the Board and can not be changed. Students will need to memorize these or write them down in a secure place. Why now? 1) many students are getting quite familiar with the workings of the computer; and 2) I am teaching these students how to be more accountable for their actions.

*Grade 4 will still use a group log-in. Flash drives are optional.

*NOTICE TO ALL VISTA USERS OR OFFICE 2007: CPS has not approved us to use VISTA nor upgrade to Office 2007. Our computers can not read files made in those programs. BEWARE, if you use your flash drive for a vista file, do not use on XP. Vista writes a code over XP. HOWEVER, to save a word file, save it as rich test file (.rtf). All computers can read that and open it up.

If using Office 2007, save everything to Word 97-2003 Template. All Office will do this: Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Publisher. Our computers will then be able to read it. Our computers can not read Office 2007.

I have been getting many students with different document programs. We use Microsoft Office. It has the ability to convert some document files-BUT NOT ALL! I have asked that if you use a program other than Office, save your document as RICH TEXT FILE (.rtf)or in notepad. Our computers should be able to open both.

Have no printer? Here are some options
>Make sure you have paid your activity fee! Computer assessments must be printed for grades. BUT, classroom assignments are your responsibility.
>Grades 7-8, send your work to your email account. Either as an attachment or copy>paste right into the body of the email. (Don't have FIRST CLASS ON HOME COMPUTER? Download the client at fc.cps.edu)
>Save work to flash drive
>Use another email account, but you must use a teacher's computer to open. Most email providers have been blocked on student computers- for security reasons.
>fax to our school

Students in grades 5-8 have adapted well to using their First Class Accounts. Since they are unique to each student, they must have them/know them. Students must be responsible for them! These passwords allow them to access their first class accounts (this acts like an email but has other features of workspaces & conferences, which encourage group work) and gradebook (where we encouage students to check their grades).

>First class: You can install the program by going to fc.cps.edu and click to download. It will put the icon on your desktop.

What educational benefits is first class?
Students can save work done at home and email to themselves. Then they can print at school

Students can save important webistes & information to a word document. Save it. Email it to themselves to save as a copy.

Students, when in a workspace or conference, can access papers or websites posted by the teacher. All users can see those documents. This way a student  has no excuse for missing worksheets.

Why check grades? Students are learning to become more responsible for their work. Teachers are posting grades often and students need to see what they have earned. Assignments need to be made up if absent or missing. Students need to see how these affect their grades. Plus, there will be no shocking news at progress report time or report card time.

CONTINUE TO BRING IN YOUR USED INK CARTRIDGES for the school. I found a company who will trade the cartridges for money. The money will go to buy paper and toner for the lab. Drop them in the box in the main office.

DOES YOUR CHILD WANT A COMPUTER? MAKE SURE YOU PLACE IT WHERE YOU CAN SEE IT!
