Chapters 7 & 8 study guide questions and predictions HW: INDEPENDENT NOVEL SELECTION ONE-PAGE PAPER – Brief analysis of author (how the author’s story in your novel is a reflection of his or her experiences and the time period), literary movement / literary period (what was society like during the time your novel was written and how/why were authors influenced by those times/events), and themes (what major ideas does the author write about and for what purpose… ex: in Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain (aka Samuel Clemens) reveals the prejudices and discrimination against blacks still deeply ingrained in the American South in the late nineteenth century; his story is filled with satire and irony in an attempt to enlighten the American people. … from there I would recommend providing an example or two from your novel. NO READING OF CATCHER IN THE RYE… UNLESS YOU CAN’T PUT IT DOWN!!! |

Must include the titles and authors of both novels. GOAL: An expository essay using Compare/Contrast elements. Discuss how both novels reveal/explain/expose something interesting/disturbing/humorous/sad/predictable... about human nature. Reflect on how and why and be prepared to include examples from the text in the full essay. You will also include a Works Cited page in the final submission. MONDAY IS PEER EDITING! In-Class: Question of the Day; Vocab #1 handout; Peer Editing of 1st Paragraph. Additional handouts on writing and grammar (save!!!). Sample paper.
