**As our school year comes to an end...I want to thank you all for a wonderful year.  This class has been just amazing and I am going to miss each and every student!!!

Many parents ask me what they can do over the summer to help their child academically and the best suggestion I have is to have a fun summer and to READ!!  Many libraries and book stores have reading incentive programs that your child can participate in and have fun. Summer is a time to relax, recharge, and have fun....which I hope you all do.  Also I always love getting letters: 34 Village Way North Smithfield, RI 02896.

Enjoy your summer and thank you for allowing me to be part of your child's life....I will cherish the time I had with them and I can't wait to continue to watch them grow here at Mercymount and beyond. :) :)

Curious George:

Our Curious George bag has just what you would think....Curious George.  I am asking families to take care of George for the week and I hope he won't get into too much mischief. Your job is to then document his journey by having your child write about his adventures. You can also take some pictures of what he did while he was with you for the week.  There is an explanation of what can be done inside the Curious George bag as well.

Student of the week:

For this bag students are asked to place some pictures and "things" that they can share with the class that will tell the class about who they are.  On Fridays the student of the week will share what is inside the bag with the class. Again there is an explanation of what needs to be done for Student of the week in the Student of the week bag.

Specials for Mrs. Corio’s first grade:

Day 1: PE (12:50-1:30)

Day 2: Music (9:30-10:10)

Day 3: PE (9:30-10:10) and Art/Computer (1:30-2:10)

Day 4: Spanish (10:10-11:00)

Day 5: Art/Computer (9:30-10:10) and Library (1:30-2:10)

Day 6: Music (8:50-9:30)

If you were here at Mercymount last year your child received a Friday letter each week stating what was done over the week.  Here in first grade we do not do that but I do update my schoolnotes each night (hopefully) letting you know what is going on in the classroom.  Since this is my main form of communication I have a color code system to help you monitor what is new and what is old on my schoolnotes.  Anything that is red and starred is new, anything in blue has been up for a while and can be used as a reference throughout the year.  For the beginning of the year everything will be red but as time goes on I will be changing some of my notes to blue.

GRADING SYSTEM:

We use a letter grading system in first grade:

C= Exceed expectations

M= Meets expectations most of the time

S= Meets expectations some of the time

N= Exhibits difficulties meeting expectations

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT OUR CLASSROOM:

PEANUT-AWARE:  Please note that we are a peanut-aware and tree nut-aware classroom.  Peanuts, tree-nuts (almonds, cashews, pecans, walnuts, etc.), peanut butter and other products made with nuts are NOT ALLOWED for snack.  Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Our room does tend to get a little warm so I ask that you send your child to school each day with a reusable water bottle. (please make sure his/her name is on it)

MONKEY BINDER:

Your child received his/her MONKEY Binder.  This is a wonderful tool that I use to keep the lines of communication open between home and school. I ask that your child bring his/her MONKEY Binder to school each day and that you empty out the left side of the  folder each night (if there is anything in there).  All notes for the office or for me are to be sent in via the MONKEY Binder in the baggie labeled NOTES.

DAILY PROMPTS:

This is where I write a keyword or phrase for you to use when asking your child about his/her day in school.  So many times I ask my children what they did in school and I get..."NOTHING!"  This is a great jump start to say "I heard you worked on Mean King Ed....what is that all about?" Hopefully you and your child can have a little dialogue about what was done in school.

HOMEWORK:

**Enjoy your summer!!!

Another key component to 1st grade is carrying over what is done in school to home.  That being said, we have a homework schedule we try to follow each night. Please realize I know how busy everyone is after school but also please realize how important it is to just review reading on a nightly basis.  The homework that I send home should not take more than 20 minutes a night but it should be done each night.  Yes, I know there is that night when you have karate, ballet, and piano lessons so maybe you skip that night but please try and make it a habit to do "homework" at least 3 of the nights.  So many times parents will say to me, "I don't understand why my child isn't reading fluently yet."  When I ask them about what they are doing at home to reinforce reading I usually here how busy the after school schedule is.  Please again, I get it...I have two boys but if you value your child's education, which obviously you do...you are sending them to Mercymount, then please practice.

What needs to be done for homework? Well I am glad you asked. :) Each night I ask that your child read the week's poems and state paper(s) to an adult. Your child should tap each word as he/she reads his/her homework.  If the reading is too difficult for your child I am asking that you read the work but still have your child point to the words.  This is a wonderful way to help your child become a great reader. :):) I thank you in advance for your help and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Homework Schedule:

Monday night: Poem books (Return on Friday) and State sheet (Return on Friday) Students should be reading their poems and state report each night! :)

Tuesday night: Math flash cards

Wednesday night: Vocabulary (due on Thursday)

Thursday night: Math worksheet

Friday night: No homework

This year our social studies program is exploring the 50 states of the United States.  Each week students will learn about a new state(s).  Students will write “reports” in class and will practice reading them for homework.

Poem books and State sheets will go home on Mondays and will be returned on Friday mornings.  Please initial the poem and state paper so that we know your child has been practicing reading them during the week.

MYSTERY READER:

If you ask anyone from last year they will tell you how much they loved our Mystery Reader program.  Once I confirm a date for your Mystery Reading time, I am asking that you e-mail me some clues I can share with the class.  The idea behind the clues is to have the students use their detective skills and try and figure out who is coming in.  For example one of your clues could be: I have a son or daughter in Mrs. Corio's class.  I ask that you e-mail me about 4 clues.  The last clue should be one that will close the case and leave no doubt in the child's mind as to who is coming in.  I read the clues the morning of your visit and the children love trying to figure out who is coming in to read.  When you do get to the school, I ask that you go see Mrs. Smith in the office- she will hide you away and then she announces over the intercom that our class has a Mystery Reader.  The children really do love this time so please see if you can find a Wednesday that will work.  We also love having uncles, aunties, grandmas... anyone who loves to read to 14 eager children!  Our Mystery Reader day this year is Wednesdays at 9:00am unless it is a Day 6....on Day 6 it will be at 9:40.  If you have any other questions or concerns about this program please don't hesitate to ask.

Wednesdays at 9:00 are usually our Mystery Reader day but if for some reasons Wednesdays at 9:00 don't work for you and you would like to be a Mystery Reader PLEASE let me know and we can definitely set something else up.  I just picked a specific day of the week/time to help me with scheduling but we can always have a special reader come in on a different day or at a different time! :) :)

**Mystery Reader Dates that are available (I will take dates off once someone is assigned to that date :

**All dates are full for Mystery Readers but if you haven't had a chance to be a Mystery Reader and you would like to be one....just let me know and we can find a day and time that work. :) :)
