Rhonda Peacock - EC Teacher 3-5

It is hard to believe we are into the 3rd quarter of the
 2011-2012 school year! 

My classroom has moved this year.  I'm in room #120 which is located on the main hallway near the kindergarten/first grade classrooms.  It's beside my classroom from last year.

A Few Reminders:

***You will be asked to attend a meeting for your
 child to update his or her paperwork at least once
 during the school year.

***Information that I send home for you concerning your child will be in his or her agenda.

***5th grade students will have a transition meeting near the end of the year as we prepare for middle school.

***Remember to read with your child every day and ask them what they have learned at school.

***Your child will have a red folder that will come home each Tuesday for you to review and sign.



***You will receive a progress report from me each time you receive a report card from the classroom teacher.

How to help your child math word problems:
A suggestion for our "Helping with Homework" night was to use the "SIR RIGHT" method.  The method is:
Start by reading the problem silently.
Identify all numbers.  Some numbers may be hidden like "half as many"
Read the problem aloud and draw a picture (in your head or on paper)
 
Read the problem again to decide what it is asking for.  You may need work backwards.
Inquire.  Ask yourself what you need to do to solve the problem.  Add or multiply to get a larger number and subtract or divide for a smaller number.  Look for key words to tell what to do.
Give the problem smaller numbers than the ones actually used in it.
Ham it up!  Act out the problem if needed.
Take a pencil and solve the problem, check your work, and be sure the answer makes sense.
