Why are we writing about pollution when we are supposed to be working on yearbook? Everyone needs to learn to write for different audiences and for different purposes.

The writing on the pollution solutions and the Hero assignments were given to help students take on new roles and learn to write with a different voice for a different purpose.

Everything we do is practice for getting the final pages completed -- learning to save and share and upload--those experiences were to help students know how to get information where it needed to be when it needs to be there.

Be sure to check moodle regularly! All assignments are liked there and if you are absent it is the best place to see what we have been doing when you are gone. Remember, grades are updated every Thursday nite.

Week before Winter Break 12/14 - 12/18/2009

This week we will be finishing and sending out five week projects to the server. We will be making sure that all parts are completed, shared, and put on the server in preparation for your presentations when you return from break.

Pre-Tests were due on the day they were assigned -- you needed to complete them as homework if you didn't finish them in class. You also had access to extra credit to help make up for any of the assignments that were missing. Some of you didn't get off to a good foot.

This trimester, late assignments will not be accepted past the drop dead grade date. Pay attention to these dates in class. Those who are absent will be given time to make up the work before the drop dead date. There will be fewer chances to complete work on your own time and shorter deadlines.

END OF THE TRIMESTER!!!! 12/12/09
Review the video and the whole lesson about electricity at the this link. (http://www97.intel.com/en/TheJourneyInside/ExploreTheCurriculum/EC_CircuitsAndSwitches/CSLesson10/) You will be having a quiz over the transistors next week -- we will decide which date depending on the progress of your five week (well a bit longer) projects.

12/7/09 Grades have been updated. Check your student's skills - below is a partial list of things that we have learned so far. Want to know how they are doing? Ask them to show you one of the items listed below.

We are starting to move towards the application of our skills and will be doing more practice with spreadsheets this coming term as well as how to use these skills in other classes, while implementing the use of some new websites as well. They may not be able to do all of them without some prompting, but they have done all of them at one point so far this year.

Create a new document on google pages;saving with the proper format; sharing with the teacher.

Logging into all class websites used inclass that can be found on the class website www.mayebteach.organd then class websites and passwords

Inserting original drawings in both googledocuments and ms office documents

Completing both online and offlineassignments that are found in moodle.com

Taking notes from videos and using notes toanswer test questions

Taking notes and being able to enterinformation into a form using links provided

Setting up schoonotes responses includingthe heading, the name field, the email field, and the security letters and processingthe information presented and preparing a quick, organized response in writing (bykeyboarding)

Taking both 10-key and keyboarding testsand entering the scores in the class form (from the website)

(We’re still working on this one) – knowinghow to use quotes and data to support opinions and how to properly cite asource using a specific style (MLA, APA, etc.) so that a proper bibliographycan be generated

11/20/09 Grades have been updated. If you want to check your weighted grades and know your category totals, I have included a few links to help you do the math...
Weighted Grade Formulae and Calculator
Wordy Version works just as well.

Five Week Projects are entering their final phases with presentations the first full week in December. We will also be starting yearbook assignments for everyone in class and moving into our journalism/writing for broadcast unit as well as some intellectual property law.

All re-takes have been graded, so check powerschool as I may have missed one or two. Remember, if you are turning in something past the due date whether it's for a re-grade, absence or ANY REASON, you will need to fill out the "WHY I LEFT THE ROOM/ABSENT/RE-GRADE" form and in the message box let me know WHAT is late and needs to be graded and why. Helpful to put your period in there properly as well.

Have a great Thanksgiving Break and we will see you on November 30th when we all return. We will need to plug the computers back in as they are taking the days off as well. Special thanks to Mr. PN in sixth period for helping get the new computers set up and running!

Week ending Nov. 20th - WE NEED BIG JARS of Hand Sanitizer to refill our class supply. Disinfecting wipes are also in demand.
We are down to our last few squirts!

  • We are in week four of our five week projects. Students are in the production phase and will have the week after break to finish up and polish their presentations.
  • All work that is missing or needs to be re-done is due before the end of the week. Many grades have taken a bit of a tumble as a result of the last few quizzes and reflections that are all worth between 60-100 pts.
  • Any re-work that needs to be regraded needs to be sent to the teacher via the WHY I LEFT THE ROOM form on the main class site, www.mayebteach.org.
  • HINT: there have already been two extra credit assignments posted. Students who have been paying attention to moodle and the other class sites have already found them. Any attempts will need to be completed by Friday as they will be closed after that date.

Week Ending October. 16th

We started our five week projects this week after completing a typing challenge to Eye of the Tiger.

We are using music as a challenge to get everyone's speed and accuracy up as we re-learn the proper keyboarding technique and practice with multiple formats including zen keyboarding (learning the location of the letters), physically typing practice exercises from a paper (to help students learn to keep eyes on the paper rather than checking to see where hands are located).

We are starting on the Week One work from the FIVE WEEK PROJECTS link and are practicing managing documents with googledocs and each group is receiving some individual training to help them learn their projects' technical requirements.

Progress Reports were sent home on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009 and will need to be signed and returned by Friday. I hand out progress reports for anyone with a C or below in my class. Any questions, please send an email by clicking on the CONTACT MS MAYE link at the top. You can also be notified each time that these notes are updated, by signing up for the NOTIFY me button (above).

We are also working with twitter this year. If you want to follow us, please let me know that you are following in our class. The link is http://twitter.com/mayebteach. It's updated periodically. We are testing out many modes of communication.

If you ever want to check out our class website, head to www.mayebteach.org.

Week Ending September 25th
This week the grades took a tumble. We had an open note quiz that many students didn't do well on. We also had two assignments due -- a Computer of the Future (due Friday) and a Poem (that we have been working on since the first week of school). The Poems needed to be typed on our google.partner page and shared with me.

We will help everyone get caught up on Monday. Most students are done with the poems, they just forgot to share them with me. We are still learning all the programs and procedures.

Have a great weekend.

This is a yearlong course dedicated to all things tech. We all be going through boot camp to learn how to save, link, retrieve and create using a variety of programs. Once boot camp is over (approximately three weeks) we will begin to assign trimester, and yearlong assignments for yearbook and the other online publications that this class will be responsible for maintaining.

Special projects will be assigned throughout the year to selected groups of students who have a bit more experience with the technologies.

We will be podcasting, movie-making, keeping the school newspaper up-to-date while working closely with the various clubs, community organizations, and special counseling activities to help publicize and keep everyone up on what's happening here at ESMS.

Whether you have a little or a lot of experience, come join us on this journey. All courses are yearlong -- no more trimester classes, so we will be able to explore many more items in more depth this year.
