English III Honors: American Literary Heritage

September 25, 2009

Homework:  1.  Tips and errors with summer essay  2. Read Act 4 of The Crucible

1.Write the number of the tip or error.
2.Write the definition of the tip or error.
3.Write the number of times the error occurs.
4.Fix the sentence if it is a sentence-level error. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 26, 55, 58, 59, 60, 61, 63, 65)
5.If the error is a paragraph- or essay-level error, write what you as a writer are going to do next time to avoid this mistake. (12, 50, 52 are the big three)

Example:

1.    3: Tense agreement problem: write about literature in the present tense. (1 time)

* Henry fantasizes about Catherine as he drifts in and out of dream-like half-consciousness, waiting for nightfall.

2.    12: Missing complete introduction to quotation or missing clarification of quotation. (5 times)
In two cases, I forgot to give a clear description of the scene before the quotation. Instead I used phrases that were vague like “in the beginning of the novel.” Now I know not to do this. Next time, I’ll frame the action of the quotation by describing just enough of the plot to give my reader an important sense of context for the quotation.  But in the other three cases, I didn’t have enough commentary to explain why the quotation was important to the thesis. Next time, I’ll be sure to analyze the syntax and diction of the quotation. And if I don’t find any details or language worth analyzing in the quotation, I’ll rethink using that quotation. Like Mr. Evans says, “powerful quotes make a powerful essay!”
