Mrs. Singletary's Class Feel free to contact me at lsingletary@mcsdga.net or leave a message at the school (706- 748-2461). NEWS FLASH !!!!! OUR CLASS WAS ONE OF 3 BLANCHARD CLASSES WHO PARTICIPATED 100% IN PTA MEMBERSHIP!!!! WE ARE WINNERS !!! Your children were very proud when our class was announced as winners! Thank you, parents! And, thanks to Paul and Valerie Workman who joined for a few parents who could not. Phonics and Language Arts- In past weeks, we have focused on the letter L, O, and G, H, T, P and A. Next week's letter will be 'N'. Please help your child by reviewing previously studied letters as well as the letter of the week. We are now putting these letters together to sound out words. If needed, please help your child to print the letters correctly. With each letter of the week, please emphasize the sound to your child...find them in everyday print, point them out and encourage your child to find them in print --magazines, food boxes (cereal, etc.) billboards, anywhere we see words. Each Thursday, your child will bring home a poetry journal. Please read the letter in the front of the journal. The poetry journal is designed to encourage reading for enjoyment and reading together. Your child is NOT expected to read EVERY word in the 'poem'. Some weeks there is a sight word in the poem that he/she should be able to identify; and some weeks (esp. holidays), it is solely a poem to read and enjoy together. In any case, it is not meant to be stressful. Please read the poem TOGETHER. Let your child point out words he/she knows. Point to a word and ask you child to read it. This week's sight words are 'look' and 'at'. Math - We are working on numbers 0-10. Please help your child in writing those numbers, if needed. We have also been doing activities with patterns (AB, ABB, etc.) finding the missing shape in a pattern, and recognizing shapes (rectangle, circle, square, and triangle). Most currently, we are graphing and posing questions for our graphs. A standard for the 1st nine weeks is to write their first AND last name correctly. That is, the first letter upper case and the others lower case; and all letters proprotional. At this point, most students need help with that at home. The handwriting tablet you purchased from the supply list can be used for this. Social Studies - A standard for K is to learn about certain national holidays. We have discussed Independence Day and Labor Day. Students should be able to tell the names of the 2 holidays and why we celebrate them. We have learned about community helpers - and how they help our community. Your child should have been able to tell me his/ her street address by now (homework assignment for the last month). Please assist your child in knowing the city in which they live, as well. The children thank all the parents who sent in apples. We made a graph to find out how many of each apple color we had. Then, we had a taste test to find out the favorite apple color of the class. Can your child tell you the results? The graph tells the results! We graph to organize information. Thank you! Lenley Singletary and Ms. Wolfe
