WEEK OF FEBRUARY 8-12
-The first Accelerated Reader test for this quarter is due to be taken by Friday. Monday and Tuesday will be reading days in Language Arts, so try to test EARLY. Students who do test early will have 5 bonus points added to their score!
-Congratulations to the many Beta Club students who will be attending the awesome Conference on Monday/Tuesday! Good luck, do well, and know that your teachers are proud of you!
-We will begin our latest essay on Wednesday--a letter recommending a book to a friend. Be sure to be thinking about a book that you've read that you could describe, evaluate, and recommend! You'll need to choose your book by Wednesday. It's best if it's AR, but OK if it's not. It must be a book for middle schoolers--no Dr. Seuss (yes, I know. I love One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, too!).
------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday, February 8
-Fill out the AR handout given to you today, paying careful attention to #2 and #3. These will get you in practice for Wednesday's essay unit, and if you choose to use the book you're currently reading for your Recommendation essay, you may actually want to USE what you write!
-Bring your AR book and a snack tomorrow!
Tuesday, February 9
-Fill out the Accelerated Reader Pre and Post Writing Form! Be sure to turn this in AFTER YOU HAVE TAKEN YOUR AR TEST! Answer questions using beautiful, complete sentences, and think through your responses. Be honest! You aren't graded on WHAT you say, just HOW you write!
Wednesday, February 10
-Fill out the Good Book Handout. Tonight you must commit to a book to write about for your Recommendation essay! Choose wisely. You'll need two 10-sentence body paragraphs with lots of E (elaboration) and S (saying how/why the scenes you choose to write about are worth reading)! If you don't have a copy of the book you plan to write about, see if you can get one from home/Library/Media Center. It will really help to have the book with you when we begin writing on Friday.
Thursday, February 10
-None tonight! Come tomorrow ready to begin writing!
Friday, February 11
-Happy Valentine's Day, you guys! I do truly LOVE YOU! :)
**********************************************
WEEK OF JANUARY 25-29
-Congratulations to the wonderful All-A Honor Roll students who get to have lunch with Mrs. Hamler on Monday! Your teachers and peers are very proud of you!
-Our first QUIZ for the quarter will be Friday! Begin studying three or four words from your handout each night beginning Tuesday! Use your class notes to help you with the prefixes!

Tuesday, January 26

-Your parent-signed ARP Quarter 3 Contract is due tomorrow.
Wednesday, January 27
-Write each word (1-10) on your handout in an original sentence. You will need a total of TEN sentences, one for each word. Underline the word in the sentence and double-check its spelling. Be creative! No elementary sentences, please.
Thursday, January 28
-STUDY for tomorrow's quiz. Know the spelling/definitions of 1-10, the prefixes' meanings and words using them, and the meaning of the word "inference."
-Bring a book and a snack for tomorrow's reading day!
Friday, January 29
-Happy weekend! :)

WEEK OF JANUARY 21 AND 22
Welcome back to 3rd quarter, Supernovas!
-What? You listened in class and actually CHECKED your new.schoolnotes.com page tonight? Bring in a paper that says you saw this that is signed by those adults who take care of you and you'll get an instant 20 points extra credit! May I say, "Happy New Year?" By the way, this is between you and me. No phoning, emailing, texting, or communicating in any way with those lazy bum friends of yours who haven't bothered to check out this site! ;)
-You will take your 3rd Quarter ARP Contract home Friday for parent signature. Keep the blue copy at home for reference, and return the white one as a grade. It's due back signed on 1/27, but turning it in early will earn you 5 points extra credit. The reading requirements are the same as for last quarter!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday, January 21
-Using today's handout on "The Things That Haven't Been Done Before," write a letter to Mrs. Brown in which you answer questions #4 and #5. Remember, use a heading (Dear Mrs. Brown,) and end it with "Sincerely," "Yours Truly," etc. The length must be seven sentences. Use perfect spelling, grammar, and handwriting! You may certainly type if you wish. Just be sure to double-space what you type.
-Bring a DRINK for tomorrow's ARP Reading Day! I'll provide the snack! If you are already reading an AR book, bring it to school. We go up to the Media Center tomorrow to get your new 3rd quarter book.
Friday, January 22

WEEK OF DECEMBER 7-11
-GREAT NEWS! "SPAN" IS NOW WORKING! Parents, you can go online to see your child's grades, but here's something you need to know! If there is a grade that is BLANK, don't worry! It means that your child's paper has not been graded yet! I am currently working on grading/recording all make-up work, Remembered Time essays, and the vocabulary quiz taken last Friday. Everything will be up-to-date by Wednesday, so hang in there. Please remember, too, that questions about your child's scores should be directed to your child first. Once I have handed papers back to students, I will not be able to explain why your child has received a certain grade, but your child will certainly know! Students keep all of their papers in the Language Arts section of their notebook until we clean notebooks out at the beginning of each new quarter.
-Students, remember that there is NO homework this week since some students had homework over the weekend! The only work is to practice for your part in the play and get your Reading Practice form signed (it's a grade, as is the actual reading). I will always tell you to check out a script and remind you to practice the day before you read.
-Extra Credit Opportunity! Bring in a container of antibacterial hand towelettes or wipes for 20 points EC each. You may bring in up to five for a total of 100 extra credit points! :)
-------------------------------------------------------------
Monday - Thursday, December 7-10
-Read over your part on the day before you are to perform. Practice out loud with an audience, and ask for help with the difficult pronunciation! Get your folks to sign the Reading Practice form to show that you have spent time on your lines. Turn this in on the day that you read.
-Turn in borrowed scripts BEFORE you go to 1st period!
Friday, December 11
-Happy weekend! :)
***********************************************
WEEK OF NOVEMBER 30 - DECEMBER 4
-Your last ARP test for the quarter is due Friday, 12/4! If you take it earlier, I will add five points to your score! Be sure to use the notes you've taken when you test. Good luck! By the way, we go up to the Media Center on Friday, so you can wait until the last minute if you have to do so!
-We begin our Charles Dickens unit this week! Be sure to practice your lines at home (once you find out what role you have in the interactive reading of the play). Your parents are invited to attend on the day(s) that you read.
-Your first vocabulary quiz on the Dickens Vocabulary is on Friday. Study these words a few at a time each night. These aren't easy words, but just think of how smart you're going to be once you've learned them! :)
-Wednesday is an EARLY, EARLY release day!
-Be sure to get your parents to sign the Reading Practice form once you've practiced your lines at home! Read out loud and ask your family for help with pronunciation! Some of these words in the play are L-O-N-G ones!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday, November 30
-Bring your ARP book to class tomorrow. As students audition for their roles out in the hallway, you'll be reading/taking notes on your book to prepare for Friday's test. If you've already tested on that last required book, you may bring a magazine or any other suitable reading. It doesn't have to be an AR book if you've already taken your two required tests for the quarter!
-Quiz on vocabulary words is Friday!
Tuesday, December 1
-Write each of the ten vocabulary words 5 times and their definitions twice. Be neat, number your words, and use the format we discussed in class. Memorize the first three words/definitions to help you prepare for Friday's quiz.
-Read/take notes and be ready to take that last AR test on Friday!
Wednesday, December 2
-Practice your lines if you've been told you'll read tomorrow. Return the script before you run off to 1st period, and be sure to mark your name off the list. Have your folks sign the Reading Practice Form and turn it in on the day you read.
-Study words 4-6 so that you'll do well on Friday's vocabulary word quiz. Write 4-6 10 times each and their definitions one time. Use the format we discussed in class, number your words, and be neat. Quickly review 1-3 from last night.
-Take AR test by Friday!
Thursday, December 3
-Practice your lines if you've been told you'll read tomorrow. Return the script before you run off to 1st period, and be sure to mark your name off the list. Have your folks sign the Reading Practice Form and turn it in on the day you read.
-Study words 7-10 so that you'll do well on tomorrow's vocabulary word quiz. Write 7-10 ten times and their definitions once. Quickly review 1-6.
-Take AR test tomorrow!
Friday, December 4
-OK. Here's the problem. If you're reading on Monday, your homework is the practice your lines. As I've always promised, if I give you homework over the weekend, you have no homework the following week since I've stolen your family time. What that means is that there will be NO homework next week unless you are reading and need to practice. That means there will be no Language Arts homework other than your reading practice/signed reading practice form for this play. At all. For anybody. (Those last two sentences might be incomplete, but aren't they lovely?) Seriously, enjoy your weekend, you guys!
