May 18, 2011 Dear Fifth Grade Parents, The students did a fabulous job on their animal reserach projects! I was extremely impressed with the effort that the class put into this. I told the students that they have until Tuesday the 24th to turn in any revisions if they would like to improve their grades. For the remainder of the year, we will be discussing items from our health curriculum. There will be two or three smaller assignments, but no big project. Please remember to help your child dress appropriately for the zoo field trip this Friday. Who knows if sunscreen will be necessary, but please send your child with some if it looks like we will have sun. Students may wear hats with their regular uniform. Please send a snack with your child. They may purchase snacks at the zoo as well. The students will be allowed to visit the gift shop, but I will ask the chaperones to not stay too long. Please let me know if you have any questions. Gary Green P.S. Please check Powerschool for the latest updates on grades. April 20, 2011 Dear Fifth Grade Parents, We are going to do the attached research project to go along with our heredity unit. I will speak to the students about the project next week. The students do not have to work on this over the break. We will spend our class time on Thursday, April 28, Tuesday, May 3, and Wednesday, May 4 working on the project and researching in the computer lab. The project is due Thursday, May 11. The class time we spend will not be enough to do a great job on this assignment, so they will need to work at home as well. For the final activity of the heredity unit, the students will go to Hogle Zoo; I will let you know the date soon. The students will have a sheet to complete as they tour the zoo. Please let me know if you have any questions. February 25, 2011 5th Grade Parents, We are at the end of our Earth Surface unit. Attached is the description and rubric for the project the students will complete. The students will not have partners for this project and they do not need to present it in front of the class, although everyone will have the opportunity to present if they wish. It is due Thursday, March 10th. The students will spend our class time on Tuesday and Wednesday in the computer lab researching for the project. Please let me know if you have any questions. Also, I checked into going to the Kennecott Copper Mine in conjunction with this unit. They do not start field trips until April, so I will send out more information as it gets closer to better weather. Gary Green January 19, 2011 Dear Fifth Grade Parents, The students did very well on their electricity presentations! I told the class that they did better on "understanding" and "speaking" compared to the first time they presented. I have spoken to almost all of the students about their rubrics and the last few students will receive their scores today. Attached is the sheet for our new unit: Earth Surface. Volcanoes and earthquakes--very cool! Mr. Green December 15, 2010 Dear Fifth Grade Parents, Please check Powerschool for the latest grades. There are many students who are doing wonderfully, but there are some students whose missing assignments are hurting the grade tremendously. If a student is missing assignments, s/he can see me during class (if we are able) or after school and I can tell the student about the missing assignment and extra credit to make up for the late penalty. Also, the questions, "What is current electricity? What can we do to be safe when using electricity?" are due tomorrow. The students have received the dates for their Electricity presentations. We begin Thursday, January 6 and end on the following Thursday. I stressed with the students that their understanding of the questions is weighted much more heavily than the creativity of their presentation. Being creative will help with the effort portion of the score, but having a detailed knowledge of the answers and having a well-practiced presentation are more important. In fact, a student could get 100% and have only one or two simple examples to accompany each of the five questions. Have a Merry Christmas! Gary Green
November 30, 2010 Dear Fifth Grade Parents, The Science/Dance performance by Repertory Dance Theatre on the 18th was wonderful. Thanks to those parents who came along. We are going to the Trans-Jordan Landfill and the Murray Power Plant on Wednesday, December 1st. The students will not miss their lunch; we will return at 12:30. Students may bring a snack on the field trip. We will be outside for part of the time, so the students should dress warmly. At the end of this unit, the students will create a presentation like the one they did for the matter unit. The explanation sheet for this project is attached. We do not have enough time to complete the project before the break, but I will choose presentation partners for the students (if they wish to have a partner). The presentations will begin Thursday, January 6th and continue into the next week. Students will find out the day they will present before Christmas break. Please let me know if you have any questions (801-527-2069). Gary Green October 20, 2010 Dear Fifth Grade Parents, The matter presentations were a lot of fun to watch. I was very pleased with how the students practiced their talks. The students have a rubric that gives the final grade and details how they did on each question and in each category. I spoke with your student about the rubric and gave him/her an opportunity to ask questions about it. If your child would like to improve his/her presentation grade, s/he may write answers to the 4 questions and turn them in by Wednesday, October 27th. We will begin our next unit, "Magnetism & Electricity," today. (The question sheet and keywords that we will study in our new unit are in the "My Files" section at the bottom of this page.) In conjunction with this unit, we will take a field trip to the Trans-Jordan Landfill and the Murray city Power Plant on Wednesday, December 1st from 8:30am until 12:30pm. Please let me know if you would like to come along on the bus and help chaperone. I will send home permission slips soon. In conjunction with science in general, we are going on a field trip to the Rose Wagner Theater to see Repertory Dance Theater's presentation "Imagine That." This show presents science topics through dance. (You may read more about it at this website: http://www.rdtutah.org/upcoming.html The show is on Thursday November 18th; we will leave at 9:45 and return around 11:40. As with the other field trip, please let me know if you would like to come along on the bus and chaperone. There are a limited number of seats, so the first people to volunteer will get the available spots. Take Care, Gary Green
September 24, 2010 Dear Fifth Grade Parents, The students and I have had a lot of fun learning about matter, but alas, the end is near. The students have received a sheet describing our end-of-unit project. (A copy is attached to this e-mail.) Some students chose to complete the project by themselves and some have chosen to do the work with a partner. I told the students that this project is due Tuesday, October 12th. It will take all three of our classes that week for everyone to present and since students may be bringing in many materials, I will tell the students on Thursday, October 7th what day they will present. Please read the attachment and let me know if you have any questions. Gary Green
August 23, 2010 Dear Fifth Grade Parents, I am excited to work with your children this year. I have taught fifth grade science for 12 years and it isvery enjoyable! Introduction We are going to learn a lot and have fun this year. In order to accomplish this we will use five big science skills: Ask questions, observe, record data, solve problems, and apply what we have learned to other situations. These skills correspond to the skills listed at the beginning of the fifth grade science curriculum which is located on this website and the St. Vincent School website (stvincents-school.org). We will do experiments, have class & partner discussions, read, write, draw, tell stories, watch shows, and other tasks to help the students learn. As our school philosophy states, we believe that parents are the primary educators of their children, so at times, I will have the students discuss with you what we did in class as part of the their homework. As we learn the science curriculum, I will reinforce our Schoolwide Learning Expectations (Active Christian, Effective Communicator, and Self-Evaluator). We will cover the curriculum objectives, but the learning expectations that follow the students from grade to grade are the most important.
Assessment Students will be assessed based on their homework, classwork, projects, and participation. As is indicated in the handbook, I will put homework grades into Powerschool within one week of the due date and project grades within two weeks. I allow students to do extra work to make up for late penalties. For example, let's suppose a student does not turn in an assignment worth 10 points. Since the late penalty is 20% per day late, the student's score will be a "0" after it is five school days late. The student would need to do the original assignment before s/he could do extra credit. Once the original work is turned in and it is well-done, I would speak to the student about extra credit. The amount of work necessary to make up for the 10 point penalty is the same amount of work needed on the original assignment. If the assignment was 6-8 sentences, that is how long the extra credit would be. The better the effort, the more points that are gained. If the student scored an "8" when s/he completed the original assignment, that is the most s/he could score with the extra credit. I also allow students to redo work that is not their best as long as they put in a good effort the first time. A student will not be allowed to redo work that is turned in only partially done. Students have two weeks from the original deadline to redo their work, or less time if the quarter ends before the two weeks.
Right Now To begin the year, we are learning standard 1 of our curriculum: "Students will understand that chemical and physical changes occur in matter." If you have any questions, please call me at 527-2069 or e-mail me at ggreen@stvincents-school.org. I look forward to working with you and your fifth graders!Gary Green | |
