What you and your parents need to know about Ms. Pierce’s Class…

Class Expectations

  • RESPECT yourself, others, and the learning environment!
  • Believe in yourself!
  • Always do you best!
  • Follow the school rules.
  • Always head your paper properly! (upper right-hand corner: first and last name, date, class period & assignment name)
  • Complete ALL assignments!
  • Save ALL assignments in the science section of your notebook.
  • No fragrances (I am highly allergic. This includes perfume, cologne, scented lotions, body spray, and anything scented. This is very serious.)
  • Please, do not move the furniture unless instructed.
  • Clean up your area before leaving!
  • Students may bring bottled water but may not drink during labs.

Daily Class Procedures

  • Students should be in theirs seats and on task when the tardy bell rings.
  • Students should READ, and comprehend, the daily agenda, including the Georgia Performance Standards for the day.
  • From the daily agenda, on the board, students should copy the items in the “Write in Agenda” box into their student agendas. Students will be recording daily assignments, due dates, upcoming tests, and other important class items to remember. This is required. The purpose of this assignment is to help prepare them for their extended education, by showing them the value of keeping an agenda.
  • Students should complete the bellringer, carefully following the day’s instructions. Students will put the week’s bellringers on one page. This will be graded.
  • Once the beginning procedures have been completed, students should prepare for the day’s lessons.
  • Students are not dismissed until I dismiss them.

Agenda Abbreviations

The student agendas have small blocks for students to write their information, so they may use abbreviations. Here are some common abbreviations.

TI = turn in

BR = bellringer

HW = homework

WB = workbook

TB = textbook

XT = extra credit challenge

PR = progress report

MM = Multi-media presentation

9WE = nine-week’s exam

PT = pre-test

UT = unit test

GPS = Georgia Performance Standards

CRCT =Criterion Referenced Competency Test

pp = pages

voc = vocabulary

ch = chapter

Q = quiz

WS = worksheet

CW = crossword

NB = notebook

If a Student Is Absent…

Students are responsible for all assignments, even if they are absent. This includes the agenda and bellringers. Every assignment has a learning objective and is necessary for the students to meet the GPS requirements. I keep previous daily agendas on my board. Students are to look there when they return. It is the student’s responsibility to get his/her make-up assignments. The student should ask me for worksheets and arrange to make up labs and tests. Students have 3 days, upon return, to make arrangements to make up their assignments. This information is also available on my schoolnotes website at http://new.schoolnotes.com/jpierce/ .

How I keep parents informed of their child’s progress (& attendance incentives)…

Each student will receive one extra credit point each day he/she attends class. These points will be recorded on a weekly progress report that must be signed by the parent/guardian and returned to me in order to cash in on the extra-credit points. The report may contain other extra-credit points also. Students will only get one copy of the report. If a student loses the progress report, he/she does not receive the extra-credit points. I try to attach a grade report to it every other week. The report will go home on Monday or Tuesday. If I am running late with the reports, I will notify parents on my website http://new.schoolnotes.com/jpierce/ and have students copy it in their agendas. The following section shows what the progress reports look like.

Closing remarks…

The new year brings new opportunities for success. With support from home and school, each child has the opportunity for unlimited success. A parent plays the most important roll in a child’s life. I am asking for updated contact information so I have every opportunity to keep you updated on your child’s success. Please keep this document handy for further reference, and sign and return the attached form. Each student is required to bring the form back, signed, for a participation grade. Remember that I send a weekly progress report home. Please, ask your child for this document, sign it, and return it with your child. The child receives extra-credit points with each signature.

Thank you,
