10/7/09 Good evening parents! Science: Today we begin studying the Earth and it's layers. We began with notes and a transparency that illustrates what the layers of the Earth are. ELA: Today was our second day going over adverbs. We also finished reading the story "The Dog of Pompeii". Ask your children about the story and have them tell it back to you! We also wrote 5 sentences about the story in class. We will be working on reading and writing much more during the next 9 weeks. Encourage your children to give their opinions or details about stories or what you are talking about - this will help them when we begin to write. Math: We continued with graphing ordered pairs today. We will continue graphing ordered pairs or finding ordered pairs from points that are already graphed through the rest of the week. Social Studies: We are continuing with our chapter on Mexico. Please share any knowledge that you have of Mexico with your children!! If you don't know much about Mexico - ask your children!!
10/9/09 Happy Friday!! Science: We are continuing with the layers of the earth and the earth's interior. On Monday we will have a quiz on this! Encourage your children to look over their science notes this weekend. I also gave out spelling words for next week's spelling test. The words are: core, crust, mantle, pressure, oceanic, granite, seismic, interior, continental, and magnet. The bonus word is: lithosphere. Today in ELA we are continuing our lesson with adverbs. Your children had a small adverb quiz this afternoon. We also read some short passages on guide dogs which related to the previous story that we read, "The Dog of Pompeii". In Mathematics we concentrated on coordinated pairs and finding the pairs to go with a given point. We also reviewed multiplication and division. In Social Studies we are continuing our chapter on Mexico. Next week we will begin doing PowerPoints on Central American countries! Have a great weekend! Tuesday October 13, 2009 Good evening parents! Science: Please study the science spelling words with your children. This particular set of words can be quite tricky! We are finishing up with the layers of the Earth today! Tomorrow there will be a small assessment on what we have worked on so far. ELA: Today we will continue working with adverbs. This week your children will begin writing in their journals. Please ask them about what they have written and encourage them to be as detailed as possible. If they can add the details while they are speaking it will be easier for them to translate that to writing! We will also be reading the story "Storm" which is about a sled dog that is racing in the Iditarod. Math: In math we will be finishing up with ordered pairs. Our homework tonight for math is writing the 3's, 4's, and 5's times tables two times each. Please sign your child's paper once they have completed the homework. Social Studies: Today we have a review on our chapter about Mexico! Tomorrow will be our chapter test. Please continue to talk with your children about different nations in the world and encourage them to find out more about the nations that we are currently studying! Have a great night! 10/16/2009 Happy Friday!! Science: Today we had our Science test on mantle convection! It was a very hard subject but our students did well. Our spelling test will be on Monday! We will be doing a lot of writing in the upcoming months and they are all doing very well. Math: Next week we begin working with line graphs and ratios. Today the class beat me in multiplication football! Social Studies: We have just begun Chapter 9, Central America and the Caribbean Islands. Have a fabulous weekend!!! 10/28/09 Good evening!! Science: We have moved into plate tectonics and mid-ocean ridges. This is difficult material but the students are doing very well! We also have spelling words each week in science. The reason for this is that some of the most challenging words that our students encounter are the infrequent subject specific words that they must use in science. They are doing quite well with spelling and today they had their practice test. Most of them passed but please encourage all of them to study for Friday's test. ELA: Please encourage your children to read the AR books that they check out from our library. Our library day is every other Thursday. We will be attending tomorrow. I allow the students to check out one book that is in their zone of proximal development and is an AR book and I also allow them to check out a book that may not be on their reading level. Today in ELA the entire class took AR tests on their book and I am proud to say that they all passed!! They were quite proud of themselves!! I would like for them to take and pass at least one AR test every two weeks. Math: We are working on line graphs in math. We will have a test on line graphs on Friday. Social Studies: This week we have been studying the Caribbean Islands and watching "West Side Story". Today students wrote on the cultural differences that were portrayed in the movie and why there was so much conflict between the Sharks and the Jets. |
