  • In class writing of expository essay.  Final copy to be turned in. 
  • Homework:  Analyzing figurative language handout
  • Next Quiz:  January 14/15-"I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings"

January 6/7, 2010

  • Students continue to work on expository essays.  Essays will be completed and taken up on January 8/11.
  • Read from "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" page 32-38 in PH Literature book.
  • Homework:  Complete Sensory Chart handout

October 1/2

  • Quiz on "Charles" and Nouns.
  • Finalize essays.

September 29/30

  • Quiz scheduled on "Charles" for October 1/2.  Nouns quiz also on October 1/2.
  • Students continue to revise and edit their persuasive essays.
  • Final Essays to be completed October 1/2.
  • Homework:  Study for "Charles" and Nouns quiz next class.

September 25/28

  • Quiz scheduled on "Charles" for October 1/2.
  • Students worked on their persuasive essays.
  • Homework:  Worksheet on Vocabulary and Nouns

September 23/24

  • Quiz scheduled on "Charles" for October 1/2.
  • Students completed a Noun Study Guide.  They also worked in class on essay drafts.  We are getting close to doing some revisions! 
  • Students had a POP Quiz.  Students must do their homework assignments and bring their books to class each day!
  • Homework:  LINCS for "Charles" vocabulary.

September 18/22

  • Students worked on persuasive essays in class.  We are almost through the Prewriting phase.  Some of the students have started their drafts.
  • Homework:  Read "Charles" page 22-26.

September 17

  • Thanks to all who attended LHMS Open House tonight!

 September 16/17

  • Students had their first literature quiz on "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh."  They also began the pre-writing phase of a persuasive essay.
  • Homework:Students are to brainstorm to select a controversy that they will use for their persuasive essay.  They should write several endings to locate a issue that they are passionate about.  Students are to complete a cluster map for their controversy with the reasons and details that will be used to support their position.  Be ready to begin the first draft in next class!

September 14/15   

  • Students completed cluster maps with reasons and details to plan a persuasive essay.  They should now know what is a "good" reason and what is a "vague" reason to support a persuasive topic.  Students completed a character wheel for the Joby character in "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh".
  • Students should bring their textbooks to class with them each day!
  • Homework:  Answer Review and Assess questions on page 12, 1-6, all parts.  Do not copy the question.  Be sure to answer all questions in complete sentences!

September 10/11  

  • Students will begin working on persuasive paragraphs in class.  They will also read a literature selection, "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh" in the textbook.  Textbooks are being sent home.  Students should bring their textbooks with them to each and every class!  There will be a quiz on "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh" during class on September 16(Silver) and September 17(gold).
  • Homework:  Prentice Hall Literature Book, page 14, under Grammar Lesson, Complete Practice (Sentences 1-5) and Writing Application (4 sentences).      
    September 8/9 Homework:  Complete LINCS if you did not finish in class.Week of August 31  We have been doing Language and Writing pretests.  This week has been spent going over the writing process.

August 24/25  Homework:  Students and parents sign and date rules and procedures sheet.  Student returns signed form.
