Mrs.Hamilton's First Grade Class
BARNSTEAD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Dear Parents,

I encourage you to join the mailing list at the top of this page. That way you will be notified when I have updated the information on this web page. I will update this site monthly so that you can stay in touch with what your first grader is doing here at school.

The "Homework" section of this page will be updated every weekend. Be sure to bookmark this site and show your child how to get to it easily so that they can use the educational links and flashcards.

You can get in touch with me by calling the school at 269-5161 ext. 108 or use the e-mail button at the top of this page. I check my e-mail messages and voice mail at the end of the school day after the children have been dismissed. If you have an emergency or a change in end of the day plans or transportation, please call the School's office at 269-5161 ext. 0.

Thank you,
Mrs. Hamilton

Classroom Information

We have released 5 Monarch Butterflies!  2 were boys and 2 were girls!

Boys have 2 spots on their lower wings and girls do not.

One of our butterflies' wings got caught up inside its chrysalis and was struggling. So we put it out in the sunshine to get energy.  When we checked on it later in the afternoon it had flown away so we were unable to check to see if it was a boy or girl.

Classroom Donations

Donations of boxes of soft tissues would be appreciated!  Thank you!

 Math Homework

Our EnVisions Math Program has a "homework" component.  Students will have homework every Monday through Thursday evening to complete.  The homework reinforces and provides practice with newly learned concepts.  All homework is differentiated based on your child's daily assessment score.  Your child is to complete the numbered examples that are circled in red.  All homework is to be completed in pencil only.  The homework activity must be completed at home and returned to school the next day.

Home-School Connection Family letters will be sent home at the beginning of each Unit and provide an explanation of an idea or activity to involve, assist and guide you with your child's mathematics education.  These letters are for you to keep and refer to while working with your child at home.

A homework folder will be provided for your child to bring the activity home, complete and return the next day in the same folder.  Please be sure to check this folder every night with your child.

Absence

If your child is absent, I will send home any work that is missed in your child's homework folder. If you would like to make other arrangements to pick up missed work, please call the school office.

Snack/Lunch Information

The Cafeteria Office will send home a letter in your child's homework folder if the account has a negative balance. Please return your payment in the folder the next school day in an envelope with your child's name and account number.  If you forget your child's account number, please call the Cafeteria Office at 269-5161 ext. 162.

Library

When your child goes to the School's Library with our class, he/she will be allowed to borrow two books. One book will be a Library book. This is usually a book that you can read to your child. The second book will be a Leveled book. A Leveled book is a book that your child can read to you!

Leveled books that are sent home are at your child's independent reading level. An independent reading level is the level at which your child can read on his/her own and shouldn't need any adult assistance. If you are unsure as to which book is the Leveled book, look at the number/number on the bottom right hand corner of the book. The first number tells you the level and the second number tells you how many words there are in the story.

Reading Log

Your child's goal is to share twenty minutes of reading time with you daily. Your child may read to you, be read to or a combination of both during this time. Beginning in October, a Reading Log will be sent home every two weeks so that you can record your minutes read daily. For each week, you or your child will need to record the title(s) of the  book(s) read each day and who did the reading. It would be helpful to post the Reading Log in a convenient place to record the information regularly. It is important to remember that twenty minutes of reading are required by all first graders each day.

The Reading Log is to be returned to school on the due date that is located at the top of the Reading Log. A new Reading Log will be sent home every two weeks for the remainder of the school year.

After two Reading Logs are returned for the month, your child will receive a coupon for a free pizza at Pizza Hut!

Remember the ten ways to become a better reader: Read, Read, Read, Read, Read, Read, Read, Read, Read, READ!
