Engineering and Technology Class
Below are the weekly assignments for each grade level. Most of the projects do not require homework. Students may ask you for materials for their projects but all projects will be done in class.
This week: November30 - December 11, 2009
All Grades will have a Vocabulary Quiz every other Friday. Students can bring the words home to study on Thursday Night.

FOUNDATION
“The part of the building that is below the first floor; it is designed to support the superstructure.”
FOOTING
“The part of a structure below a foundation wall that distributes the structure’s weight.”
ALLOY
“A metal that is a mixture of two or more metals or of a metal and nonmetal.”
INSULATION
“Material used to keep heat from penetrating a building in summer and cold from penetrating in winter; also keeps heated or cooled air from escaping outdoors.”
LASER
“A narrow, intense beam of light that concentrates a lot of power in a very small space.”
JIG
“A device used to hold a part and guide a cutting tool.”
MILLING
“Cutting by moving the workpiece past a tool having sharpened teeth equally spaced around a cylinder or along a flat surface; done to smooth a surface of cut grooves or slots..”
TURNING
“The process of revolving a workpiece against a sharp cutting tool to get the desired shape.”
SPINOFFS
“Products or processes that are created as a result of the space program’s technologies but are used on earth..”
SCORING
“Crushing paper along a fold line in preparation for folding across the grain.”

JUSTIFY
“Adding spaces between letters and words to make line lengths even, resulting in straight margins.”
VERTEX
“The point where two lines intersect to form an angle.”
UNITS
“A measure of distance on a drawing.”
TANGENT POINT
“The exact point where a line or arc joins another arc.”
ARC
“A part of a circle circumference.”
RADAR
“A system used for tracking planes and satellites. A signal is sent out and a receiver picks up the returning wave that is reflect from objects”
SONAR
“A means of determining water depth by sending out ultrasonic waves and timing how long it takes for the echo to return.”
TYPOGRAPHY
“The art of effectively using type to convey a message.”
LEADING
“In typography, the total line spacing including the type size and extra space.”
CLIPART
“Copyright-free artist illustrations that are purchased in book or disk form for use in publications .”
6th Grade Vocabulary
CARTESIAN COORDINATE SYSTEM
“A system that allows you to plot points on a drawing. The system is based on an imaginary grid.”
DEGREE OF FREEDOM
“The ability of a robot to move in a certain direction.”
WORK ENVELOPE
“The space within which a robotic arm moves.”
BUOYANCY
“The upward force a fluid places on an object placed in it.”
ROBOT
“A machine made to act like a living thing.”
AIRFOIL
“A shape, like the wedge-shaped wing of an airplane, that is designed to speed up the air passing over the top surface.”
AILERONS
“Wing flaps on an airplane that change the shape of the wing, increasing and decreasing the amount of lift the wing creates.”
CIRCUIT
“In electricity, the pathway through which electrons travel.”
RESISTANCE
“The opposition to the flow of electrons.”
GRAVITY
“A force that pulls objects towards the center of the Earth.”

I do have a zero cheating policy. If a student does cheat they will recieve a zero with no exceptions.

Reminders...
8th Grade students need to bring in a soda cardboard box for the roller coaster project.
Students need to bring vocab sheets home to study during the week.
