Reading(8:05-9:15) – Lon Po Po

Monday ­

 

Skills for the Week Emphasis:

 

Summarize

 

Context Clues

SET:  Pass out Wikki sticks.  Ask students to focus on key parts of a fiction summary and be ready to locate sentences from the story to tell the characters, setting, problem, solution attempts, and solution.  (Use Reteach page 154 as basis for choosing sentences.)  Review Academic Vocabulary term:  narrative.

T20:

  • Students will listen to story on CD and underline key parts of a summary with Wikki sticks.
  • As a class, complete Reteach page 154 (8 sentences that summarize Lon Po Po).  Students will illustrate one of the eight sentences to post in the hall.
  • Post these same eight sentences on website http://www.wallwisher.com/wall/summarizelonpopo.
  • Create class summary of Lon Po Po using Someone Wanted/But/So/Then strategy. 
  • Display leveled books (Who’s Afraid of the Wolf, Return of the Wolf, Peter and the Wolf).  Encourage students to read and take AR tests on these.

CLOSURE: Allow students to work with a partner to identify key parts of a summary with Wikki sticks on a previously read fiction story.

Tuesday ­

SET:  Review vocabulary definitions and have students identify syllables for these words, citing the syllabication rule from our poster.  *1b(DOK1)

  • Locate vocabulary words in story and discuss context clues.  *1f(DOK2)  Academic vocabulary review:  context
  • Students will complete a study guide for the reading skills of the week.
  • Assign homework page 150A.

CLOSURE:  Review MCT2 skills with flipchart, “Beat Your Last Score”.

Wednesday ­

SET:  Pass out “Summarize” poster to a student to read.  Pass to another student during the lesson to read again.  *3a1(DOK3)

T20

  • Students will listen to the story on CD.
  • As a class, complete a Venn diagram on Lon Po Po and Little Red Riding Hood.  Students will then complete their own Venn diagram.
  • Students will complete a tri-fold focusing on the following skills:  summarize, making inferences, compare and contrast, making connections *2d(DOK3).

CLOSURE:  Students will share ideas from their Venn diagrams.

Thursday

SET:  Review vocabulary and skills before test.

T20:  Reading and Spelling Tests

CLOSURE:  Students will work as partners to complete Venn diagrams on the computer.  *3a1(DOK3)

Obj: TSW identify genre with 80% accuracy.  *2a4 (DOK2)

Friday ­

SET:  Have students locate in agenda calendars “President’s Day”.  Have students make a list of known presidents.

T20:  Read non-fiction article “George Washington” (Best Reading Practices, pages 67), emphasizing skills:  predicting, genre, drawing conclusions, visualizing, summarize, and cause and effect.

CLOSURE:  Pass out coins for students to identify presidents.

 

Language(9:30-10:30) – Reference Sources

Each Language Lessonbegins with DLA folder that emphasizes various MCT2 skills.

  • Review actual reference resources & identify with index card labels.

  • Pass out student thesaurus books.  Students will work as partners to write two synonyms for a list of words.

SET:  Ask, “What does persuasion mean?  Think of when you needed to be persuasive.  What persuasive skills worked with adults?  What skills don’t always work with adults?”  Academic vocabulary review:  persuasive

T20: 

  • Read letter to family requesting a pet bird.  Discuss persuasion techniques.
  • Read I Wanna Iguana and discuss persuasion techniques.
  • Using 4 Square graphic organizer, students will write a paragraph that states a fact (need a new pet) with convincing arguments using fantastic word choice, then ending with a feeling sentence.

Tuesday

SET:  View and discuss “Weather Tools” PowerPoint.

Wednesday

SET:  Allow students to share “storm stories”.

Thursday

SET:  Students will share results of one week weather research using website www.weather.com.  Gather and display local weather information such as temperature, precipitation, clouds, etc., on graphs and use graphs of weather patterns to predict weather conditions. (Sc.3.4c DOK 3)

T20: Students will complete 1/2 science test study guide and complete for homework.*3Sc7(DOK3)

SET:  Students will view Video Learning Animation.  Lesson 14-4  CUSTOMARY UNITS OF CAPACITY  Reviews Grade 2:  4a (DOK 2)  Select appropriate tools and units, estimate, and measure length (to the nearest inch, foot, yard, centimeter, and meter), capacity (to the nearest ounce, cup, pint, quart, gallon, and liter), and weight (to the nearest ounce, pound, gram, and kilogram).
