9:15-9:25     Each English lesson begins with DLA (Daily Language Activity) folders.  The skills throughout the week include analogies, synonyms/antonyms, sentence editing, nouns/verbs/adjectives/, context clues.  A flipchart for each lesson is available.

 

Monday - The students will use proper nouns, commas, and past-tense verbs, and practice test-taking skills.  Text page 182-183.  The students will read an article to learn why writers choose words with prefixes, how writers use good endings to sum up their ideas, and how taking notes helps a writer organize ideas.  Text page 184-187.   *3LA1c, DOK=2, *3c, DOK=3, *3a1, DOK=3Students will learn how to take notes and summarize. Text page 188-189, WB p.42.  *3LA2c2, DOK=2

SCIENCE LESSONS……………………………..Earth’s Land

Monday – “What are Slow Landform Changes?”  Students will recognize why landforms constantly change and describe how wind, water, and ice shape Earth’s surface.  Text page C38-45, vocabulary:  weathering, erosion, glacier.  *4b.  Compare and contrast changes in the Earth’s surface that are due to slow processes (erosion, weathering, mountain building) and rapid processes (landslides, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods, asteroid collisions). (DOK 2)

 

Tuesday – “What are Rapid Landform Changes?”  Students will identify earthquakes, volcanoes, and floods and how they change the surface of the Earth.  Text page C46-51, vocabulary:  earthquake, volcano, flood.  Visit website for most recent earthquakes, http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.php.  View BrainPop website video-clip, "Earthquakes".  Use textbook to complete Idea Map on Earthquakes and Volcanoes.  Read exerpt from book DISASTROUS VOLCANOES (p.1-3,7,8).  Refer daily to test questions.  View BrainPop movie on Volcanoes and Mountains.  Read exerpts from DANGER!  VOLCANOES by Seymour Simon (Kade's book).  Earthquakes links to website (http://www.sfmuseum.org/1906/06.html - this one has a power point on pictures from 1906 San Francisco quake).  *4b.  Compare and contrast changes in the Earth’s surface that are due to slow processes (erosion, weathering, mountain building) and rapid processes (landslides, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods, asteroid collisions). Wednesday – “Yellowstone Geysers”   Students will identify how volcanic eruptions change the Earth’s surface at Yellowstone.  Text page C52.

 

Thursday – “How do Soils Form?”  Students will identify where soil comes from, how it forms, and the importance.  Text page C60-65, vocabulary:  soil, human, topsoil, bedrock.  *4a.  Recall that soil is made up of various materials (weathered rock,  minerals, plant and animal remains, living organisms.) (DOK 1)
