"A Language can not be Taught"
"A Language has to be Learned"

For your, or any, child to be able to speak a second language, he/she must work and review at home. Memorization is a big part of learning, but repetition, flash cards, writing the words, or just answer questions about the vocabulary, will enable him/her to advance in class.  Please take time to ask and see if he/she is really practicing at home. This is the only way he/she will learn.

Please check your child's Assignment Notebook for information about subjects objectives and homework. ¡Muchas gracias!

Dear Parents, If you check your child's grades in the Family Access and you see an asterisk. This means the grades are not yet been posted, or that your child was given make up time for an assignment he /she missed. If an assignment is missing you will see a"0" and probably you will receive a phone call from me or your child telling you he/she will stay after school to complete the assignment. I do not give zeros, I want the student's work completed and I want it done well. Thank you for your cooperation and for caring about your child's education.

¡Avancemos! 2

Publisher: McDougal Littell

There is a classroom set of books; students will use the book on line. Codes will be given the first week of classes.

What do I need for this class? One three ring binder, loose paper, set of 6 page dividers(for vocabulary, notes, handouts, homework, verbs, and extras), pencils, green or other color pen.

Every month – One or two groups of students (3 maximum per group) will give an informal presentation about dances/music in the Hispanic/Latin World. These include: salsa, tango, mariachi, merengue, flamenco, son cubano, música andina, bolero, rock latino, cumbia, hip-hop latino, bachata. Sign up will be on the board the first day of classes.

Work Bell to Bell – Learning time is precious and cannot be wasted. I expect you to work from the ringing of the first bell through the ringing of the last bell. You will be dismissed by me, not by the bell.

Entering the Classroom –As soon as you enter the classroom, I expect you to sign in on the Attendance Sheet, pick up your Passport/Stamp Chart (Created by Mr. Daniel Minot from Friendly HS) and any other papers as needed. You should be in your seat before the bell sounds.

Tardypolicy– Parker policy states that the teacher shall contact the student’s parent/guardian on the 3rd and 4th tardy to set up a conference. The 5th and 6th tardy will result in a written referral and detention. On the seventh tardy student will receive another written referral and detention, and will be placed on “probationary status.” This means that the student may fail if he/she does not meet classroom expectations.

Classwork – You will receive a maximum of 40 points per day for your classwork. Your classwork grade will be calculated each day using the following stamp chart (Created by Mr. Daniel Minot from Friendly HS) and will be collected every 5 class periods:

DIA DE LA SEMANA:

Copying &Cheating –Academic integrity is very important both in high school and beyond. As per school policy, cheating will result in an administrative referral and a zero will be given for the assignment or exam.

Daily/weekly assignments, grading procedures, and special projects Check your Syllabus every day!  Homework is for you, and not for Sra. Edna! I already speak 5 languages (3 I can read and write fluently!)! Practice and/or using the language are the only way you will be able to speak!

Most of our 50 minute class is spent practicing the skills of speaking and listening; therefore, the third component of learning a language (the written and/or reading parts) is the nightly homework assignment. The Janesville School Board homework policy states “Any work handed in beyond the due date will NOT be accepted for a grade.” I will follow the following policy:   No late work will be accepted for credit after 3 classes. It is your responsibility to find out the homework assignment following an absence. I will leave extra assignments in a folder in the classroom. When you return, look for your class assignments, collect what you missed, and then ask questions if you're confused at the end of the day!

This is your responsibility. Don't procrastinate!

Grades are based on cumulative points, with tests having the most and homework having the least.

Homework is assigned almost every night and is a completion grade. If it is partially done, they get half credit. If they have none of it done, they receive a zero.

Tests and Quizzes Tests and quizzes will serve as one indicator of your mastery of what we have learned in class. In the case that you do poorly, you will have the chance to retake up to 2 (formative) tests or quizzes per quarter with the opportunity to improve the grade up to 80%. This will give students who do poorly the chance to improve their grade but still reward the students who show their mastery of the material on the first test. All retakes must be done within a week of the original test or quiz and must be taken outside of class time. *Retesting will not be available during the last two weeks of the grading period.

If you miss the day of a test you will take the test your first day back. You and I will discuss deadlines for make up when you return from an extended excused absence.

Being absent the day before a test does not excuse you from taking it, you will have a Syllabus (monthly/yearly) and you are expected to follow it.

Bathroom/Hallway Passes–Students will have a pass for my class with 3 passes per semester. Unused passes may be redeemed for a small prize at the end of the year. If you lose your passes you will NOT receive a new set.

Oral participation It is very important for students to take an active role in class. This involves full participation. In addition, students cannot learn a foreign language if they are unwilling to take risks.Don’t be afraid of sounding silly! Participation is based on consistently raising your hand and using the language, staying on task, and coming to class prepared. 5 points a day = 25 points/week.

Help: I am happy to provide assistance outside of class. I am generally in my room 15 minutes before the start of the day at Franklin Middle School and for at least 30 minutes after school at Parker. You are also welcome to make an appointment.

Spanish Tutoring Sessions–Tutoring sessions will be available through the Spanish Honor Society to students who feel they need the extra help.  Dates and times for these tutoring sessions are to be determined.

Grading Percentage:

Homework:5%       Extra Credit: 5%    Quizzes (Formative: Can be retaken after school) 20%

Projects and Tests: 25% (Summative: Cannot be retaken)      Participation: 25%

Semester,Final Exams: 20%

Grading Scale

89%- 88% = B+

79%-78% = C+

69%- 68% = D+

100%-92% = A

           87%- 82% = B

           77%- 72% = C

7mo grado:

LA CLASE DE LA SEÑORA EDNA

Respect Yourself and Others

ASSIGNMENTS: Spanish classes are every other day. You must turn in assignments when due. I do not give F's I want your work! You can fix this problem by staying after school, and working with me. I will not give up on you, so do not give up on yourself.

CLASS ACTIVITIES:
You are expected to listen to directions and to complete class activities within time limits. Classroom activities are always graded as oral work.

HOMEWORK:
It is for YOU and not for ME (I already know Spanish and 4 other languages too)

GRADES
are computed based on nine factors:

EXCR Extra Credit 07.00%

FRM Formative Assesments 10.00%

GRW Growth 03.00%

HMWK Homework 03.00%

ICWK In Class Work 07.00%

LABS Labs 05.00%

PART Participation 15.00%

PROJ Paper/Project 25.00%

SUMM Summative Assesments 25.00%

There is no formal grade for something you need, "Homework", but if you do it and turned in all your work on time (Before the end of a Unit) you will earn 3% per Unit. I will check it every class period. These extra points can raise your grade!

ACADEMIC GROWTH: If a student fails an assignment, test, work etc., but later the student achieves the learning of that subject, the student failing grade will not be averaged, but raised according to the Academic Growth of each individual.

HELP is available by appointment only every day from 7:30-8:45 in the mornings or 3:30 PM to 3:45 PM. in my classroom( I am at Parker in the afternoons). You can call my home phone before 8 PM. at least - 3 days before a project is due, and at least a day before homework is due. You can also e-mail me your questions and I will gladly replay before 8pm.

ORAL WORK and/or PRESENTATIONS: cannot always be made up. Excessive absence and lack of regular participation (talking in Spanish) may cause oral grade to suffer.

NOTEBOOKS or FOLDERS: You should have a notebook or folder for exclusive use in this class. Is school policy to bring your Assignment Book to every class!

FOOD: please feel free to send snacks for all students; they are permitted to eat in my classroom.

FIESTAS During the year we will celebrate culturally many Hispanic/Latin holidays, your contributions of food, plates, cups, silverware and napkins will be greatly appreciated.

These holidays are:

-Día de los muertos- In November

-Día de los Reyes- In December.

-Carnaval- In February.
