Computers for College and Careers

Syllabus

2008-2009

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to provide a basic overview of current business and information systems and trends and to introduce students to the basics and foundations required for today's business environments. Emphasis is placed on developing proficiency with touch keyboarding and fundamental computer applications, so that they may be used as communication tools for enhancing personal and work place proficiency in an information-based society. This also includes proficiency with computers using databases, spreadsheets, presentation applications, and the integration of these programs using software that meets industry standards.

Required Materials:

1. Technology Requirements: All students must have daily access to a computer with an

internet connection and web browser. 

 

Save your work on both your hard drive and another external device (disk, flash drive, etc.) throughout the course.

Software: Microsoft Office Suite (MS-Word, MS-Excel, MS-Access, MSPowerPoint).

 

CLASS POLICIES

A. Attendance: Students are expected to attend classes. Adhere to the Code of Conduct for Broward County Schools.

B. Timely submission of work- all assignments have a designated deadline. Assignments

may be submitted ahead of the deadline. Assignments submitted after the deadline shall

receive a zero.

 

C. Plagiarism Policy: Work that is submitted for credit must be the original work of the

student.

Assignments that are not the original work of the student are considered plagiarized

and in violation of the Code of Student Conduct and Academic Responsibility.

 

Plagiarism occurs when another person's work, words, or ideas are represented as

one's own without the use of a school-recognized method of citation (e.g., copied

from another source such as an author or another student without properly

acknowledging the actual writer/author).

 

Plagiarism also occurs when knowingly giving or allowing one's own work to be

copied or otherwise duplicated by another for academic credit, or when resubmitting

one's own work for academic credit.

Work completed in this course will be graded using a point system. To calculate grades, the number of points earned will be divided by the total number of points possible.

Grades will consist of the following:
Daily Class Assignments
Projects
Tests/Quizzes

MATERIALS REQUIRED: The following materials should be brought to class daily.
Folder with pockets and a place to attach notebook paper (This folder will be used for class notes, handouts, etc. and must be kept organized and up-to-date.)
A book to read for SSR (Silent Sustained Reading)
pencils, pens, flash drive

ATTENDANCE: Standard school policy will apply.

TEST POLICY: Standard school policy will apply. Students will have the opportunity to make-up tests/quizzes before school each Wednesday from 6:45

HOMEWORK POLICY: Generally there will be no homework for this class because most of the assignments are completed with the computers in our lab. However, occasionally the students may have an assignment to be completed at home. In that event, the following rule applies: Homework assignments will not be accepted late without penalty (loss of points)-One day late, ½ credit deduction; two days late, no credit (ZERO). If absent from class Standard school policy will apply with regard to makeup time permitted. In the real world, people are fired from jobs for not meeting deadlines.

If it is past the deadline date or past the specified time permitted by school policy to make-up work, the work cannot be turned in for credit. You are given a daily agenda regarding class work so you can stay current with class assignments, notes, tests, etc. Additionally, assignments are posted on a weekly basis at
www.new.schoolnotes.com/ortiz1/ Check the web regularly. Meeting deadlines is one key to success in the classroom and on the job.

CHEATING: Obtaining information from any sources other than those prescribed by the teacher for the specific assignment is CHEATING. Some examples of cheating are.

-Having a cheat sheet
-Copying from someone else's paper during a test or homework
-Using a cell phone during a test
-Talking during a test
-Plagiarism
-A student giving information will be considered as guilty of cheating as the student who receives the information.
If a student is found to be cheating, the parent will be notified and the student will receive a ZERO for the assignment, test, etc. Possibly a referral will be sent to the student's principal.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT: Standard School Policy regarding behavior and dress code as described in the Code of Conduct Book will apply. In addition, the following rules have been developed to ensure a successful learning environment.

Respect and professional behavior toward teacher and classmates must be displayed at all times. Positive attitudes are extremely important for success on the job, promotions, raises, etc. The classroom is a training ground for the way you will behave on the job. Treat others as you would like to be treated.

Come to class prepared (folder, pen, pencil, flash drive etc.). No visits to cars or other classes. You cannot show up for work, and then ask your manager to go home for something.

NO IPODS, MP3 players, head phones, cell phones ETC are to be used in class.
Cells phone are to remain off and in a students backpack or purse.
Students must sit in the assigned seat the entire period.

Passes are limited to 2 per grading period.

Due to the importance of our curriculum, students will not be permitted to play computer games, surf the web, visit chat rooms, or check personal e-mail. If time permits, students may utilize the FCAT practice tutorial on the computer to prep for this exam. Extra credit assignments will always be available. Unauthorized use of the computer is when a student uses the computer for anything other than the assigned class work. The student will receive a ZERO for each occurrence.

Due to the expensive equipment in the classroom, absolutely NO EATING AND DRINKING is permitted.
To keep our classroom LOOKING GOOD, please leave your work area extremely neat before leaving class. If you see something that needs cleaned-up do it!! This attitude shows initiative, and is exactly what employers are looking for in good employees. Those with initiative get the promotions and the raises. An its not mine or I didn't do it attitude is unacceptable.

Take care of the computers as if your life depends on it. Under no circumstances are you permitted to download programs, delete programs, or change the settings. Do not abuse, write on, disconnect, etc. the computers. Moving a mouse or keyboards to a different machine is not permitted. Failure to comply with this request will result in a REFERRAL.

Remain in your seat until the bell I will dismiss class when all students are sitting quietly and the classroom is in order.

Combing hair, putting on make-up, or perfume in class is unprofessional and not permitted in class. These activities should be done in the restrooms.

Upon completion of this course, the student is expected to demonstrate the following competencies:

01.0                 DEMONSTRATE KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND APPLICATION OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS TO ACCOMPLISH JOB OBJECTIVES AND ENHANCE WORKPLACE PERFORMANCE-The student will be able to:

01.01               Develop keyboarding skills to enter and manipulate text and data. (LA.B.1.4.3

01.02               Describe and use current and emerging computer technology and software to perform personal and business related tasks. (LA.B.2.4.4)

01.03               Identify and describe communications and networking systems used in workplace environments.

01.04               Use reference materials such as on-line help, vendor bulletin boards, tutorials, and manuals available for application software. (LA.B.2.4.4, LA.A.2.4.6)

01.05               Demonstrate basic computer file management skills. (LA.A.2.4.2, LA.B.2.4.4, LA.B.2.4.6)

01.06               Troubleshoot problems with computer hardware peripherals and other office equipment. (LA.D.2.4.4)

01.07               Describe ethical issues and problems associated with computers and information systems.

01.08               Apply ergonomic principles applicable to the configuration of computer workstations.

 

WORKPLACE COMMUNICATIONS

02.0                 DEMONSTRATE COMPREHENSION AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS-The student will be able to:
02.01               Read and comprehend technical and non-technical reading assignments related to course content including trade journals, books, magazines and electronic sources.

02.02               Write clear and well-organized research papers, integrating a variety of information.

02.03               Prepare and deliver an oral report with appropriate materials to the class

02.04               Participate in large group discussions as a member and/or a leader.

02.05               Take notes, organize, summarize, and paraphrase ideas and details.

02.06               Accurately follow written and oral instructions.

02.07               Interpret data on graphs, charts, diagrams, and tables commonly used in this industry/occupation.

 

03.0                 USE TECHNOLOGY TO ENHANCE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS-The student will be able to:

03.01               Select and use word processing software and accompanying features to enhance written business communications. (LA.B.1.4.1)

03.02               Use the writing process to create and edit business documents appropriate to the subject matter, purpose, and audience. (LA.B.1.4.1, LA.B.1.4.2, LA.B.1.4.3)

Explore, design, implement, and evaluate organizational structures and cultures for managing project teams.

Explore and demonstrate an awareness of current trends in business and the employee’s role in maintaining productive business environments in today’s global workplace.

Collaborate with individuals and teams to complete tasks and solve business-related problems and demonstrate initiative, courtesy, loyalty, honesty, cooperation, and punctuality as a team member.

 

05.0                 PRACTICE QUALITY PERFORMANCE IN THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND THE WORKPLACE-The student will be able to:

Assess personal, peer and group performance and identify and implement strategies for improvement (e.g., organizational skills, note taking/outlining, advance organizers, reasoning skills, problem-solving skills, and decision-making skills).

Develop criteria for assessing products and processes that incorporate effective business practices (e.g., time management, productivity, total quality management).

MATHEMATICS AND FINANCE

07.0                 APPLY MATHEMATICAL OPERATIONS AND PROCESSES AS WELL AS FINANCIAL PLANNING STRATEGIES TO COMMONLY OCCURRING SITUATIONS IN THE WORKPLACE TO ACCOMPLISH JOB OBJECTIVES AND ENHANCE WORKPLACE PERFORMANCE-The student will be able to:

Analyze, interpret, compile, and demonstrate the ability to present/communicate data in understandable and measurable terms using common statistical procedures. (MA.E.1.4.1, MA.E.A.4.2)

Use common standards of measurement including the metric system in solving work-related or business problems (e.g., length, weight, currency, time). (MA.B.3.4.1)
