Welcome to Kindergarten "Every student can learn. ~ George Evans November 2009 Newsletter:
Is it just me or are the weeks just flying by? This week we will be celebrating the 50th day of school. We will be doing this by counting by 5’s and 10’s to 50 and also by learning what 50% or half means. This past month we celebrated Pasta and Pizza month. The children enjoyed a small pasta lunch that I made and also a pizza lunch from Dominoes. I think Dominoes was a hit. One of our themes this month was Christopher Columbus and his adventures to the New World. It was so nice to hear from parents how impressed they are at what their children are learning and most importantly, what they are retaining. The children placed factual information about Columbus in a journal form that we think Columbus might have used. The writings of the children is getting better and better. Their use of sentence structure is getting stronger and their factual information is impressive. The month of October was National Fire Safety Month and we had a visit from two Sanibel Fire Department firefighters. Firefighter Johnny 1 and Firefighter Johnny 2, the nicknames we gave them, were amazing. The firefighters taught us how to keep safe when and if a fire is to happen in our home and most importantly how to stay calm. Firefighter Johnny 1 dressed in full gear and showed the children how a firefighter would look and sound if he was in their home looking for them or a family member. The children were also taught how to STOP, DROP and ROLL if their clothes caught on fire and also to STAY LOW and GO!! The children acted out each rule of fire by stopping, dropping and rolling as well as staying low and going. What a great informative speech and afternoon it was. Spiders. These ugly critters are of interest to the children, boys and girls alike. Every year I am floored by the interest that the children have with Spiders. We learned about the native spiders of Florida and how dangerous they can be as well as their habitats, body parts and eating habits. We summed up the thematic unit by making spider cupcakes and they were yummmmeeee. Our Fall Celebration was a celebration full of center activities that the children threw themselves into. While some children graphed candy that was shared, others made ghosts out of Nutter Butter cookies. In the Art center we made ghosts with shaving cream and googly eyes, this was fun and messy just the way we like it. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents who have donated supplies for not only our Fall celebration but out Spider cooking center as well. It is an absolute pleasure to not only teach your child but to share the many laughs, stories and playful insights that a five-year-old has. Affectionately~ Mrs. Betz
