Welcome to Kindergarten "Every student can learn. ~ George Evans February 2010 Newsletter:
February proved to be a month full of diversified learning. As we prepared for Groundhog's Day, we learned that a shadow is made when we block a light source whether it comes from the sun or a light bulb. With the help of a flashlight, we were able to make shadows in the classroom and watch as their positions change depending on the location of the light. Once we understood how shadows were made, we all anxiously waited to find out if the groundhog saw his shadow. Happily, he did, for some. We then decided to challenge the groundhog tradition by graphing the upcoming six weeks to see if the groundhog's shadow is one to put trust in. To date, the groundhog is “absolutely” correct. We are endearing an additional 6-weeks of winter-like weather!! UGH! On Valentine’s Day we were pleasantly surprised by all the Valentine cards we received from our friends. It was fun learning how the tradition of the Valentine Day card came about many, many years ago. Curious about the tradition? Ask your child, they would love to share that with you. Presidents week immediately followed with a wealth of information about our first and sixteenth president, President Washington and President Lincoln. The children enjoyed the many facts about both presidents but the one fact enjoyed the most was why President Lincoln wore a long hat. (To hold all his import papers.) Also, if you look on the Lincoln memorial, President Lincoln’s hands are positioned in an “A” and “L.” The alphabet letters in American Sign Language. February is officially Dental Health month and we were left with a new understanding of how to keep our teeth healthy as well as the healthy foods that will not harm our teeth. The finale of the month was an exciting day of Mardi Gras. We traveled our school campus throwing beads and coins as we taught the other students about the tradition of Mardi Gras. I was so impressed by the knowledge and facts that the students retained. We ended the day by eating a bit of Mardi Gras tradition, a King cake. Ask the children what is inside a King cake and what happens when you find the special something. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many parents who have supported us with their special donations. If it were not for your generosity, Kindergarten would not be such a BLAST!! Much affection, as always, Mrs. Betz
