Writer's Workshop
For Writer's Workshop, students will learn how to use strategies that will help them when they get stuck with their writing. Students will learn to focus on their writing as a series of events. Students will focus on spelling their high frequency words correctly in their writing and learn how to combine short choppy sentences and to split long wordy sentences. We will be reading several good stories to help demonstrate this skill to the students.
Student News
Students, I am so glad to have you in third grade this year! We are going to have such a great time together. Some dates to remember are on November 18th, students will be visiting Horizons in Salisbury. November 19th, students will be having their Honor Roll Tea at 8:30 a.m. and the Cookie Dough Fundraiser money is due. On November 24th, we will have another early release day.
Reading

In reading this week we will be reading, "The Island-Below-The-Star". Students will be working together in groups to compare and contrast this story with the story they read last week. We will also work in guided reading groups to explore the story in more detail.
Math
For the next two weeks students will be learning about multiplication. We will also review the new terminology associated with multiplication for this week. Students will be taking daily timed quizzes on their multiplication tables. Please help them to study every night for this. Students will be working at their own paces to learn them. We will be learning about telling time this week. Students will show and tell time to the half hour and quarter hour and also to the minute. Lots of hands-on activities are planned.
Social Studies
Students will learn what life was like in the past when they study about the Voyage of the Mayflower. Students will be able to take a trip back into time. They will study about past life and compare it to today. Students will be making dioramas which will depict what life was like for the Pilgrims. They have the option of picking several different scenes from our story we read last week. Thank you to parents who sent in empty shoeboxes. We really appreciate all your help. The students are so excited about these and have been working hard.
Science
Students will continue to learn about the skeletal system and how to identify bones as the body's mean of support. Lots of hands-on activities planned.
Parents,
I would continue to encourage you to work with your child at home. Please make sure they are reading for 20 minutes each night. The students have to do Reader Responses on what they are currently reading. I will also be sending reading stories for the students to do each night. These stories will ask questions at the end of each story. It is very important that students learn how to gather facts from their reading. Each week you will be recieving information about the A.R. tests your child has taken. Students are also learning their multiplication tables. I have sent home little multiplication booklets with the multiplication tables in them. Students will be taking these quizzes on a daily basis until they master them. Please note that if your child is struggling in any academic area, we are doing all we can to get them extra help in the classroom. I will continue to keep you updated and thank each one of you for all your help and support. It is my goal that we work together to make all the students successful.
