3rd session: 11/2/09 through 12/18/09



WEEK 1 (11/2-11/6):

Students coming to health will need a 2-pocket 3-prong folder or notebook with paper and pencil; they need to get the health syllabus signed and returned right away; they will be required to write daily smart starts and define vocabulary words in class.


**Permission forms for the sex eduction program called "Choosing the Best" will be sent home on the first day of health and should be returned by the following week ONLY if you DO NOT want your child to participate. They will be sent to the media center during that time, not back to physical education.


6th grade: Chapter 1 Lesson 1 "The Health Triangle"

Objectives - Describe the 3 components of the health triangle and tell how to maintain a balance between those components; list 4 ways to prevent illness and injury.


7th grade: Chapter 11 Lesson 1 "Use and Abuse of Alcohol"

Objectives - Explain what alcohol is and discuss why some teens begin drinking alcohol; discuss the effects alcohol has on the body; identify sources of help for alcoholism.


8th grade: Chapter 8 Lesson 1 "What is Physical Fitness?"

Objectives - Discuss the benefits of physical fitness; describe the importance of exercise; explain the difference between aerobic and anaerobic exercise.


NOTE: Quizzes will be given often to reinforce content learned that day.


WEEK 2 (11/9-11/13):

Notebook checks will be on Thursday 11/12 for B-day and Friday 11/13 for A-day for all grades.

6th grade: Chapter 1 Lesson 2 "Your Self-Concept"

Objectives - Tell why it is important to have a good self-concept; list who influences someone's self-concept and how they influence it.

Chapter 1 Lesson 3 "Decision Making"

Objectives - Summarize the 6 steps of decision making; list positive and negative parts of each option when making a decision; describe benefits of making good decisions.

7th grade: Chapter 11 Lesson 2 "Use and Abuse of Drugs"

Objectives - Identify ways in which drugs are misused and abused; discuss dangers associated with marijuana; name common stimulants, inhalants, and other illegal drugs and their dangers.

8th grade: Chapter 8 Lesson 2 "Elements of Fitness"

Objectives - Describe muscle strength and endurance; define the 5 elements; discuss how to set goals for physical fitness.

Chapter 8 Lesson 3 "Planning a Fitness Program"

Objectives - Discuss the components of a balanced fitness program; describe 3 stages of an exercise program; list ways to avoid the risk of injury.

WEEK 3 (11/16-11/20):

6th grade: Chapter 1 Lesson 4 "Setting Goals"

Objectives - Differentiate between fixed goals and flexible goals; summarize how to select goals; list the steps in a plan of action to achieve a goal.


7th grade: Chapter 11 Lesson 4 "Risks Involved with Alcohol and Drug Use"

Objectives - Explain why drinking alcohol and taking drugs are risk behaviors; discuss the physical, mental, and social consequences of using alcohol and drugs.

Chapter 11 Lesson 5 "Avoiding Substance Abuse"

Objectives - List reasons for avoiding substance abuse; discuss how teens can say no to substance abuse; explain how avoiding alcohol and drugs can help them reach their full potential.

8th grade:  Chapter 8 Lesson 4 "Individual and Team Sports"

Objectives - Compare the benefits of individual sports with those of team sports; discuss a lifetime plan for staying fit; describe the equipment and facilities needed for an exercise program

NOTE: Thursday for A-day and Friday for B-day, each grade will be playing a Jeopardy Game to review chapter content, turning in their smart starts, and taking a chapter test.

WEEK 4 (11/30-12/4):

All students will bring home 3 assignments over the next week for their parents to answer and discuss with their children. PARENTS PLEASE SIGN THE HOMEWORK that you have answered the questions and have the students return them to class for three grades of 100. If they do not return the assignments, they will earn 3 zeros.


6th grade: Begin "Choosing the Best Way" Program

Objectives - Learn the decision-making process and practice it; discover the value of goal setting; determine the qualities of a good friend; learn the difference between a crush, an infatuation and love; learn how to prevent sexual abuse; identify emotional needs; and discover ways to build self-esteem.


7th grade: Begin "Choosing the Best Path" Program

Objectives - Identify the risks of being sexually active; learn about the possible emotional consequences of premarital sexual activity; discuss self-respect and its role in abstinence; learn about the most commonly sexually transmitted diseases; learn about teen pregnancy and the circumstances of a couple who becomes pregnant; discuss if "safe sex" is really safe enough; discover how responsibility relates to sexual activity.


8th grade: Begin "Choosing the Best Life" Program

Objectives - Discuss how girls and guys view sex differently and how teens can misuse sex to meet emotional needs; learn why premarital sex can have negative emotional consequences; discover how alcohol increases the risk of casual or unwanted sex; discuss how STDs can lead to serious health consequences; learn why sexually active teens are at risk to contract an STD; discover how "safe sex" is not safe enough and does not eliminate the risk of STDs.


WEEK 5 (12/7-12/11):

6th grade: Finish "Choosing the Best Way" Program

Objectives - Discover the facts about teen pregnancy; consider the emotional risks of teen sex; learn about sexually transmitted diseases; discover why abstinence is the best WAY; find out the facts about "safe sex"

Chapter 3 Lesson 1 "Your Friends"

Objectives - Explain why friendships are important to social health; describe the qualities of a good friend; describe positive and negative peer pressure.

7th grade: Finish "Choosing the Best Path" Program

Objectives - Identify the four major pressures to have sex; understand the role of alcohol in influencing teenagers; discuss respect and how it relates to not pressuring others; discuss abstinence; consider the reasons to be abstinent until marriage; discuss the difference between infatuation, love, and sex; learn how to set boundaries.

Chapter 10 Lesson 1 "What Tobacco Does to Your Body"

Objectives - Discuss the harmful substances found in tobacco products; name several forms of tobacco; list the harmful effects tobacco has on various body systems.

8th grade: Finish "Choosing the Best Life" Program

Objectives - Learn abstinence is the only way to eliminate the risk of pregnancy and how the consequences of teen pregnancy changes lives; discover that HIV/AIDS is a devastating disease that has no cure and that abstinence eliminates the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS sexually; discuss all choices have consequences and abstinence can bring freedom and help teens reach their goals.

Chapter 9 Lesson 1 "Building a Nutritious Diet" and Lesson 2 "Making Healthful Food Choices"

Objectives - Discuss the factors that influence a person's diet; describe the food guide pyramid; discuss how to choose a healthy diet; define the roles of fiber, caffeine, and cholesterol in the diet.

WEEK 6 (12/14-12/18):

6th grade: Chapter 3 Lesson 2 "Your Family"

Objectives - Identify the five types of families; explain how families can remain healthy; describe types of family problems and where to turn for help.

Chapter 3 Lesson 3 "Communicating Thoughts and Feelings"

Objectives - Describe ways to express emotions appropriately; identify the best way to communicate thoughts and feelings.

7th grade: Chapter 10 Lesson 3 "Tobacco Addiction"

Objectives - List reasons teens use tobacco; analyze media messages about tobacco; discuss physical and psychological addiction to tobacco; show the effects of tar from smoking using a "Smokie Sue" doll.

Chapter 10 Lesson 4 "Choosing to be Tobacco Free"

Objectives - List ways to refuse nicotine; explain how tobacco affects nonsmokers.

8th grade: Chapter 9 Lesson 3 "Managing Your Weight"

Objectives - Explain the difference in overweight and obesity; describe the importance of calories in weight management; list some do's and don'ts for dieting.

Chapter 9 Lesson 4 "Eating Disorders"

Objectives - Describe anorexia and bulimia and how they damage the body; discuss overeating and other factors that contribute to obesity.
