HW Writing prompts for the week of Feb 1st.  Please time your child for 45 minutes to practice for the FL writes test on Feb. 9th!

Monday

Everyone has a day where something funny happens.

Think about a time something funny happened to you or you saw

something funny.

Now write a story about what happened on that day you considered to be funny.

Tuesday

We have all heard that it is important to be a good reader.

Think about why you think it is important to be a good reader.

Write to explain why you think it is important to be a good reader.

Wednesday

Everyone has been alone at one time or another.

Think about a time you were alone at home or someplace else.

Write a story about a time you were alone so the reader feels that he was there.

Thursday

Everyone has jobs or chores.

These may be things people do because

they are asked to do them or because doing the job or chose makes

them feel good about themselves.

Now explain why you do your job or chore.

Students will understand and use author's purpose in a context of a story and summarization, and compare/contrast.  Students will analyze how character and setting contribute to plot development.     We will be implementing Vital Reading skills using CRISS, KAGAN AND and utilize the smartboard for interactive learning.  We will rotate 2 different literacy centers a day; Every group will have an AR center once a week where they can go to the library and check out books. 4 times a week using Reading, word study, writing, content literacy, fluency, technology and leveled readers. The spelling and voc words are displayed below under the listed homework for each group.  I have made a Reading skills booklet (stapled) that will be used on a daily basis and should remain in your child's binder in school and put back into the binder for class the next day.

Homework for every student is to read for a minimum of 20- 30 minutes daily (or 1- 2 hours/week). Students will write in their planner: the title of the book, the number of pages read, and the amount of time read. A parent/guardian needs to sign the planner once per week, verifying your son or daughter is reading. I will be checking planners every week on Friday (or Thursday if school is out on Friday). Vocabulary and/or spelling words listed in the planner should also be reviewed as needed.

AR MINIMUM POINT REQUIREMENTS- Students need to earn 3-5 AR points a week by reading at least one chapter book or 5 half point books on their level read during centers, AR , and independently at home!!!! Students are required to read within their AR range, which is determined by taking the STAR test. Only books within their reading range or above will be counted towards their requirement.

4-2 Reading Homework

Please remind your child to keep his/her Reading homework in a spiral notebook labeled Reading.  I would prefer if he/she only used this notebook for Reading.  Please check your child's planner on a daily basis since HW is subject to change.  Daily Howmeork, studying, and independent Reading will enhance your child's Reading grade immensely.
