COURSE SYLLABUS

A P CALCULUS               2011-20112               MRS. FRISA             RM 3006

Welcome to AP Calculus (AB) at JF!

AP Calculus at JF has always been a very challenging and rewarding experience for students who enjoy math, have a strong background in pre-calculus algebra, geometry and trigonometry, and are willing to invest the time and effort necessary for success.

The curriculum is set by The College Board and can be accessed at www.collegeboard/students. JF’s participation for 2011-2012 in the Virginia Advanced StudyStrategies (VASS) Grant offers JF students several significant advantages:

  • TI-89 calculator assigned to each student for use in class and at home
  • Two weekly extra credit Calculus Tutorials: 8:15-8:50 and 3:40-4:15.  (We’ll select the days of the week together.)
  • Three Saturday AP Math Exam Prep Sessions (Dec. 10, Feb. 25, & Apr. 21)
  • AP exam fee paid for each student
  • Students who earn scores of “3” or higher receive a $100 bonus

Supplies

  • Spiral graph-paper notebook (Staples, Walmart, Office Max… These can be hard to find once school starts.)
  • Red pens for grading homework, etc
  • Box of tissues
  • Bag of small, individually wrapped candies for “rewards”

Class Rules

1.  Be on time; be prepared;be considerate.      2. Participate fully.      3. No “outside” food/beverages other than water.

Grading Scale

AP courses use a ten-point scale and the letter grade is weighted: A=5,B=4, etc.

Homework (plan on about 45 minutes per day)

  • Assignments (including snow-day assignments) will be posted by 5:00 p.m. on new.schoolnotes.com .
  • Do homework in your graph-paper notebook.  Answers without supporting calculations/work are not acceptable.
  • Use your graphing calculator ONLY on problems where the text or teacher specifically directs you to do so.
  • Working together is fine; copying homework is cheating.
  • If you have trouble with your assignment (there is a 20 minute frustration limit!) see me before school for an extension.
  • Otherwise, your work will be graded (2, 1, or 0) on the basis of what is in your notebook when class begins.
  • If a student fails repeatedly to complete homework assignments, parents will be contacted and detention assigned.

Test, Quizzes, Projects, etc.

  • We will complete several projects and have frequent announced quizzes, including “flash card quizzes.”  Don’t lose your flash cards!!!!
  • “Two Column Corrections” will be required for major tests.

Extra Help/ExtraCredit

  • If you miss class, want to study together for an upcoming test or quiz, need some extra credit points, or need help with your math for any other reason, you should plan to attend the scheduled AP Calculus Tutorials
  • You are welcome to come before school (8:15-8:50) other days, but understand that I may have hall duty, departments meetings, or other responsibilities.
  • Be sure to "save the dates" for the Saturday Prep Sessions. These really make a difference in your mastery of the material and performance on the AP exam.  They also earn major extra credit for those who attend and participate.
