Tuesday, February 9 The students have their reading logs and a spelling worksheet along with the spelling flash cards in their folders. The special for tomorrow is Art. Don’t forget the Valentine’s Cards! J
Respectfully, Mrs. D Old News: Monday, February 08 I hope you enjoyed your Superbowl Monday. We had a great day in class. The spelling test was fabulous. 12 students got As and 6 students got Bs. That’s a record! The children have their reading logs in their folders. They also have the strip for alphabetizing, a math worksheet and the graph paper to do it on. They have been directed to write the answers with the problems on the graph sheets, not on the worksheet. A special thanks to the moms that have offered to bring goodies for our little celebration on Friday. If the BX is out of valentines, I understand you can print them off from the www.primarygames.com website in my Favorite Links. Again, the list of students is in the downloads so you can copy them easily. Tomorrow we have Culture and Spanish.
Thursday, February 04 I can’t believe we had a whole week of school this week! Whew! We did a lot of work. Next week is also a full week. And speaking of next week, we're having a small Valentine's Day party on Friday. We won't be having a big ta-doo but if you could help me by making or sending along treats, that would be so welcome. I have attached a copy of the students names in the downloads. You can copy or print them out to make addressing envelopes easier. The students have their reading logs in their folders. They also have a spelling page and another math page. Again, the point of the math lesson is learning to line up the ones, tens, and hundreds when a problem is written. Could you help your child remember that we haven’t practiced answering the problems, and that I specifically told them not to answer the problems? Some students are putting answers on the papers. They’re trying so hard to do the right thing but it would be better if they followed directions—NO ANSWERS. We aren’t quite there yet. Next week we’ll be taking off on that path. Oh, and I attached a blank copy of the math graph paper in case you need an extra sheet. And a gentle reminder of homework time: Homework should not take more than 20 minutes. If it does, and you think your child has been doing their best, get them to stop and send me a quick email. There are many good reasons for limiting homework time, and DODEA has specific time limit guidelines. Children need time for play, including and especially unstructured play. I’d sure like to think that all my students have at least 120 minutes for these types of activities everyday after they do their homework. Tomorrow’s special class is P.E. Monday we’ll have Library.
Wednesday, February 03 The students have their reading logs, two spelling papers (the “Crack the Code” should have been finished in class but some students did a bit too much chatting), and the math paper that some tried to do last evening. I expect good success with all these assignments because the children did well with the lessons and preliminary lessons in class. I just want to take a little space to thank Mrs. York for her help with the math lesson today. She was a great support for those that needed an extra adult in class to keep them on the right track. And the report cards are in the folders. I need to be sure to get back the envelopes. You do need to sign the envelope, if you would. Tomorrow’s special class is Music.
Tuesday, February 02 I just spoke with Mr. Petree about our fieldtrip tomorrow and he has asked that we postpone the trip until the weather is warmer. The windchill is the concern for tomorrow, and I agree that it’s probably best if we wait for a few weeks since the weather seems to be back down in the 20*s. Not to worry, the post office isn’t going anywhere. I do think I’ll still bring the donuts, though. The homework may be confusing for the children as we didn’t get as far into the math lesson as I’d hoped. The reading logs are in the folders as are the new spelling words (these are already marked and cut for most of the children), and there is a spelling worksheet. On the back of the spelling worksheet is a math page, but I don’t want the children to do this page. I wrote a note on the top but you may not see it. We’ll work on this tomorrow. Tomorrow’s special class is Art.
Monday, February 01 The spelling tests are in the folders. Only those children who missed more than four words need to write the words they missed 5x each. The reading logs are in the folders as is a math paper. We are beginning our research about the living thing of our choice. This is an in-class project at this point so you won’t see anything coming home yet. But I do think you’ll be hearing about your child’s project from them. Tomorrow we have Culture and Spanish. Don’t forget that we have our field trip on Wednesday. Wednesday, January 27 Sorry, there wasn’t a notice last night. Both my computers were down and I couldn’t write and entry. Thanks, all which have sent in the field trip forms. I think we’ll have a great time (and a brisk walk!). The children have the reading logs in the folders. The idea webs are due tomorrow. There is a spelling paper in the folder, too. On the back of this spelling paper is a map. The questions that go with this map are on another paper in the folder. The kiddos are having fun with maps. Just so you know: we did a lot of work with the SmartBoard in class. It was great visiting the websites on this webpage as a class. Your child may ask you if they can explore these sites with renewed interest. I hope this works out for your family schedule. Tomorrow’s special classes are P.E. and Spanish. Remember that Friday is a day off for the kiddos.
Monday, January 25 The students have their spelling tests in their folders. They also have their reading logs in the folders. Today is the day they should begin to think about doing their web for a book they read this week. That is due on Thursday. Because of the new schedule, we won’t be having library on Tuesdays any more; library comes on “A” days, now. The special class for tomorrow is Art. We’ll also have Spanish.
Thursday, January 21 There is a full day of school tomorrow. A few parents were confused by the statement on the reading log. Following the log entry due date of Wednesday, January 27 there is no entry on the log for the next day. This is because all work is due on Thursday, January 28. That is why there is no school on the Friday following. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for turning in the field trip forms. I've heard from one parent that would like to come with us. I wonder if any others might like to come along. Let me know if you're interested--we'd love to have you! The reading log is in the folder. There is a spelling paper, too. The kiddos had so much fun with our in-class "code breaking" in language arts and in our counseling class with Mr. Burk that some asked for more code work to take home. If your child was one of these, the spelling homework has work on both sides of the paper. You'll know the work that's just for fun--I wrote a note on it. Also, the children have a mapping page with grid work. We talked about street addresses along with the grid lines. We'll be using a map when we go to the post office, too. Tomorrow's special class is library so the children need to bring their books.
Wednesday, January 20 Good afternoon, The children have their field trip form in the folder. Also, you will find the new spelling words and a spelling paper. The reading logs are corrected, and in the folder, as well (thanks for tipping me off, Mrs. R). Tomorrow's special class is P.E., then we'll have Spanish.
Tuesday, January 19 It's supposed to rain tomorrow. I forgot to remind the children to bring an umbrella. Can you please pass the word to them for me? The reading log is in the folders. Again, the children should be thinking about the idea web on the back of the log when they do the reading for the next two weeks. They can do the idea web for any of the books they read. I have arranged the walking field trip for Wednesday, February 3rd. We'll walk over to the BX, take the 20 minute tour, have a doughnut at the food court, then head back to school. We should be back about 10:00 that morning. Our special class schedule has changed to fit in the three new classes we have at OAES. Our schedule now goes Library, Culture, Art, Music, P.E.Tomorrow our special class is Music.
Wednesday, January 13 The children have a spelling paper and a math paper for homework. I probably should mention as a reminder that they have the idea web on the back of the reading log to complete; it is due tomorrow. We're working in several areas of math at this time. We working with time, money, geometric shapes, and regrouping. It's actually fun because the kiddos don't think of our studies as work but as conversations about real life things. And the postcards are coming along well. Soon you'll be seeing postcards delivered to your door, perhaps! And I'm working on a post office walking fieldtrip. Our special classes tomorrow are P.E. and Spanish.
The students have homework tonight but it shouldn't take them more than 20mins to get finished. The spelling paper is two-sided. There is a math paper on the back. They have a second math paper, as well. The reading log has an idea web on the back that is due on Thursday morning (it looks like it is due on Friday on the reading log, but now that we have no school on Friday, it has a Thursday due date) so you might want to encourage your child to think about getting that finished soon. Tomorrow's special class is Culture.
Monday, January 11 Please remember this is a four day week. The children do not have school on Friday of this week. The homework is light tonight. The students have the alphabetization of their spelling flash cards and their reading logs to do. All students were given the chance to read "Bremen Town Musicians" in class. If they haven't done the idea web on the back of the reading log yet, they might want to consider using this story for the web--but that is just an option, not an assignment. We explored a new web site today in Math class. The link is in the "Favorite Links" for this page. Please let your child access this site (http://classroom.jc-schools.net) for practice with telling time. I'm thinking each child would benefit from about ten minutes at the site. You might have to help them get to the correct page (the directions are with the link, and they had practice with it today). Tomorrow we have library, art, and Spanish.
Thursday, January 7 The children have their reading logs in their folders. There isn't any other homework tonight. Do continue to help your child study for the spelling test (pre-test tomorrow!). Also, we're getting pretty good at telling time and being able to tell advanced time (what time will it be in two hours and ten minutes, for instance). So it would be great if you could ask your child frequently, to tell you the time. Also, several children told me they looked at the mail with their parents. Thanks for supporting our work with letters and envelopes. Tomorrow's special class is P.E. Wednesday, January 6 We're officially back in school and the children are working hard already. Don't be surprised if they ask you to show them the mail you get. Were working on addressing envelopes and writing letters, so they might want you to show them the envelopes you get for their reference. We'll be starting a research project this month in science. We're studying the characteristics of living things and what an exciting way to share our thoughts about our favorite living thing. The new spelling word list is in the downloads. The reading logs are in the folders. Tomorrow's special classes are Spanish and Culture. |
