***8TH GRADE WRITING ASSESSMENT JANUARY 20***

January 5, 2009 - Watch tv and analyze the commercials. Identify at least 3 of the 5 propaganda techniques we discussed in class today. Write your examples on the handout, "Propaganda Techniques". QUIZ Thursday over these 5 techniques (bandwagon, testimonial, transfer, repetition, and plain folk).

QUIZ Friday over the figurative language terms and examples discussed in the warm up each morning

Monday, November 30, 2009 - ALL classes - complete the AB and C of writing for prompt #16. First draft is due Wednesday!

Quiz over possessive pronouns and possessive nouns Friday.

 

 

 

 

Tuesday, November 17 - all classes - write a story, paragraph or individual sentences with our Words to Own from "The Tell-Tale Heart".

1st and 5th Periods - Final Draft of current essay due tomorrow

 

Friday, November 13th - I will not be sending grade reports since Progress Reports just went home yesterday.

 

Friday, October 30, 2009 - I just tried to send grades forgetting that the server shuts down at 5:00 p.m. I will send them first thing Monday morning.

Next week we will work on writing the background information and citations for the science projects, as well as more Shurley Method grammar, expository writing and literature.

Monday, October 19, 2009 - READ! Don't foget about Reading Logs if you are required to complete one.

 

 

 

***Students who are interested in attending the pep rally on Friday must have met at least 70% of their AR goal 1st 9-weeks' grading period, turned in the Reflections literature piece ("Beauty Is...") and completed the literature assignment on page 181 in the literature book. An alternative for the AR points was offered on Tuesday. Please ask your child about this.***

Tuesday, October 13 - Reflections literature pieces are DUE TOMORROW! (EXCEPT for Mrs. Edleman's ELT class. You have a later due date and need to follow her instructions.) ALL classes - comprehension/vocabulary test over "The Landlady" Thursday; 5th - WWW List #2 vocabulary test - FRIDAY.

All classes - We will set new AR goals for the new grading period and go the library to check out books on Thursday. If you did not meet at least 70% of your AR goal for the 1st grading period, you will be required to keep a reading log now. I will send those home on Thursday as well. 

 

Monday, October 12 - Can you believe we have started a new grading period??? I am sooo excited! Here are a few things to look forward to over the next nine weeks:

-More opportunities for awesome writing

-More Shurley Method jingles :)

-Novels, novels, novels!

Homework - 1st/3rd/4th page 181 in literature book: Complete Reading Check (a-d), #3 and #4 (be sure to write at least 1/2 page for your ending!)

Wednesday, September 30 - READ. Sentence structure test tomorrow. Roots/vocabulary test Friday.

 

Tuesday, September 29 - Use our vocabulary words in sentences or draw a picture to show you understand the meaning of the words. You may mix-and-match. Complete your Sentence Structure Assessment Poster. Read! AR deadline is Monday, October 5th. If you did not set a goal at the beginning of the nine weeks and return your signed slip, I will average your AR test scores for your grade. You will set a new goal for the 2nd grading period.

Monday, September 28 - Finish writing on your poster the terms, definitions and examples of the 4 sentence structures we have been studying. Bring colored writing utensils to class tomorrow for the color coding. We started new roots with bios (life). Be sure to copy the vocabulary words and definitions from any student in my 1st/3rd or 4th period classes.

5th needs to also finish any Ideas from WWW List #1

 

 

"Where I'm From" Poetry Project is due THIS FRIDAY (9/18)!!!!

Wednesday, September 16- 1st/3rd/4th - finish writing sentences with your words. You should have finished this in class if you used your time wisely. Study. Read.

5th - Study your 25 Word Within The Word (WWW) roots/stems. Make a 3-columned chart for the vocabulary words 13-25: Word/What I think it means/What the dictionary says it means. Read.

Tuesday, September 15 - 1st/3rd/4th - finish coloring and writing definitions for 'foli' flash cards. Study. Read.

5th - Study your 25 Word Within The Word (WWW) roots/stems. Make a 3-columned chart for the vocabulary words 1-12: Word/What I think it means/What the dictionary says it means. Read.

Monday, September 14 - 1st/3rd/4th - copy the foli vocab words from the worksheet onto notebook paper. Don't forget the part of speech as well. 5th - make your flash cards for the WWW List #1 ROOTS only.

ALL CLASSES - your "Where I'm From" projects are due on Friday.

 

Thursday, September 10 - Classify Shurley Method Chp. 3 sentences; study para and inter roots and vocabulary; read! AR deadline is October 5! Some students still have a zero for not bringing back their AR goal signed by a parent!

 

 

 

Wednesday, September 2 - READ!!!!; study roots/vocabulary words. 5th period - finish your rewrite of the FFA ending.

 

Thursday, August 27 - I hope to see many of you at Open House Tonight! To help you study for your "chronos" and "tempus" vocabulary test tomorrow, you need to either a) write a sentence with the words, b) draw a picture of the words or c) draw a symbol that reminds you of the definition of the words. You can mix-and-match (you may choose to draw for some and write for some). I want you to have a personal and visual representation of the meanings of the words.

 

Wednesday, August 26 - Complete literature work that was assigned on Tuesday: Read to the end of Part I of "Flowers for Algernon". Answer all questions on page 61 including the Reading Check. You may omit #7.

Study Greek and Latin roots and vocabulary for the quiz on Friday.

Bring a spiral notebook (preferably 100 pages or more) with you on Friday to organize your Writer's Notebook.

 

 

There are a SIGNIFICANT number of students not doing their homework. All missing assignments must be turned in by classtime Friday in order for students to particiate in the fun activities planned for Friday afternoon. All late work is worth 60% credit. If a student has mulitiple missing assignments and cannot finish them in the time allowed on Friday, he/she will be assigned academic detenion the following week. Parents will be notified at least 24 hours in advance. Failure to show for academic detention will result in an office referral.
