WELCOME TO COACH C's CLASS

"Home of the AIM-Team"

I want to welcome each of you as you visit our website and home of our "AIM-Team" (Achieve In Math) classes of 6th grade Iguana students for the 2011-12 school year. Our primary goals are: 1) continued yearly growth and improvement in overall math levels on the FCAT, 2) positive attitudes both inside of the classroom, the school, and in the community, and 3) confidence and mastery of math's 'basic core knowledge and skills'.

ALWAYS KEEP WORKING HARD !!!! Because the saddest thing in life is WASTED TALENT! The choices you make shape your life forever.

Here are some helpful tips to guide your child:

  • Go over the directions with him/her and find out what he/she does and doesn't understand about the assignment.
  • Encourage him/her to find another math student he can call for help if he/she's unclear about the assignment or wants to review a class lesson.
  • Ask her where she thinks she should begin.
  • Ask him if he can find information in his notes to solve the problem.
  • Ask if there is a similar problem in her textbook or one she did in class.
  • Suggest that he draw or make a model to explain his thinking.
  • Ask more guiding questions as she progresses, such as, "What should you do next?" "Is this answer reasonable?" "Did you answer the question?" "Can you solve it another way?"
  • If he struggles to understand the subject matter or has trouble keeping up with the amount of homework assigned, check in with his teacher for suggestions about how to help.
  • Suggest looking for homework help online. Math.com has math help for parents and students.
  • Remember to resist the temptation to do the homework for her.
  • The greatest impact on a child's attitude about math is the parent's attitude about math. Show an interest in math and point out to your child the many ways you use math in your everyday life. Help your child understand that every parent is a mathematician

Dear Parent or Guardian:
We use mathematical skills in many of the things that we do.
One of the goals of this class is to show students how the
information they are learning in the classroom is relevant to the
real world. For example, understanding area and volume is
useful in such diverse fields as geography, navigation, sports, and
architecture.
In Chapter 14, Geometry: Measuring Area and Volume, your
child will learn how to find the areas of parallelograms, triangles,
and circles. Your child will also explore three-dimensional figures
and find the volume and surface area of rectangular prisms. In
the study of this chapter, your child will complete a variety of
daily classroom assignments and activities and possibly produce
a chapter project .
By signing this letter and returning it with your child, you agree
to encourage your child by getting involved. Enclosed is an
activity that you can do with your child that also relates the
math we will be learning in Chapter 14 to the real world. You
may also wish to log on to the Online Study Tools for selfcheck
quizzes, Parent and Student Study Guide pages, and
other study help at www.msmath1.net. If you have any
questions or comments, feel free to contact me at school.

According to Jim Fay, author of Becoming a Love and Logic Parent, giving children choices is more effective than making demands. He suggests…
-- Never give choices if it might cause problems for you or anyone else.
-- Give only two options for each choice, both equally okay with you. For example, Would you like peas or carrots? or Do you want to do homework now or in 15 minutes?
-- If the child doesn't decide within 10 seconds, make the choice for him or her.
