Today we learned how to reduce ratios (same as reducing fractions, i.e.: divide the numerator and denominator by a common factor). There is no homework.

Today we discussed unit rates and learned how to change ratios to their unit rates (divide the numerator and denominator by the denominator). Homework is page 92 (Practice 6-2) from the Practice workbook sent home today. Don't forget to get agendas signed.

We had some visitors from Va Tech today. They will be helping us with student understanding of fractional concepts and we will be helping them develop some Math applications. Today was all about circumference. We investigated two formulas- C = π x d and  C = 2 x π x r to be used depending on whether we are given the radius or the diameter. Homework is a worksheet on calculating the circumference.

We began the unit on Sequences and Patterns today. We introduced the second six weeks project. The project is to describe patterns in nature around the yard. Today we worked on our project for this six weeks. The project is all about our names (the number of letters in our names). We collected data and put it in a chart. We created a line plot and a bar graph using the data. Tomorrow we will create a circle graph. No homework.

We continued our work with fractions by discussing mixed numbers and improper fractions. We change a mixed number to an improper fraction using the "Check Mark" method. We change an improper fraction to a mixed number by dividing (the quotient becomes our whole number, the remainder becomes our numerator, and the divisor becomes our denominator). Homework is another puzzling worksheet.

Today we discussed SOL 6.4 about using pictures to represent multiplying fractions. We call this the "cake-cutting" method. Homework is a worksheet (re-teaching 5-1) on using the "cake cutting" method to multiply fractions.

Happy St. Patrick's Day early. We completed a couple of sorting activities concerning measurement and units. We solved a Lunchbox Mystery and we measured the volume, mass and weight, and length of several everyday items. No homework.

We continued to convert measurements between units in the US Customary system and the Metric system. We learned that KING HECTOR DIED UGLY DRINKING CENTIPEDE MILK. We also remembered how many inches are in a foot, how many feet in a yard, etc. Homework is Practice 5-8 (pg 88) and Practice 9-2 (pg 144). They may also have had unfinished classwork as homework.

Not a good night for homework last night, I guess! Today we were supposed to take a quiz on measurement. We postponed the quiz for some classes. We did get started on Mean, Median, Mode, and Range. Some classes have a worksheet for homework. Practice 7-1.

We continued discussing mean, median, and mode by looking at different situations and deciding which measure of central tendency is appropriate to describe the data set. Homework for 3rd and 5th is Practice Worksheet 10-2.

We began our six-weeks project called the Tic-Tac-Toe project. It is a geometry based project and is due Friday. We worked on them in class and then took our packets home. We also have a review packet for homework. Benchmark Test on Friday.
