WELCOME BACK 2011-2012

Welcome back to the 2011-2012 school year.  I would like to start by introducing myself.  My name is Ryan Folliard.  I have been a 4th grade teacher for the past 3 and a half years.  My main reason for becoming a teacher was to inspire young minds and help them grow into responsible adults.

In replacement of a syllabus and welcome letter St. Barnabas teachers are posting their information on school notes.  First, the homework policy in the handbook is what I will abide by.  Students will be required to have 45min-1 hour of homework each night.  There will be no homework over the weekend.  Homework may include studying for a test, writing a short essay/paragraph, answering questions, writing vocabulary, drawing illustrations, or any of these combined.  Most tests will come at the end of the week and as a class we will make study guides for our tests.  Assignments in the fourth grade will be weighted differently in the different subject areas.

Math 70% tests and 30% homework/classwork

Reading 70% tests, 30% homework/classwork

Science, Language Arts, Spelling, Religion- 70%tests and 30%classwork/homework

Conduct is an E for Excellent, M for Meets, and N for Needs Improvement

Art is a pass/fail grade

As for my discipline policy, I will be taking a positive reinforcement approach.  Students who do not complete homework will be given a homework notice which will be sent home and the homework will be expected the next day.  In the classroom, students who exemplify excellent behavior will receive stickers, prizes, and other rewards for their behavior.  Students who continue to misbehave in the classroom setting will be given a discipline form to be signed by the parent.  If the misbehavior continues a conference may need to be called between the parent and teacher.

I am looking forward to an exciting school year with the 4th graders.  I also look forward to meeting with the parents on the first day of school or Back to School Night on Thursday September 1 at 7pm.  Enjoy these last few days of summer and I will be seeing everyone shortly!
