BOOK REPORTS (reading with Miss Gallagher)
Students will be required to submit book reports each trimester.  These are to be grade-appropriate chapter books of at least 100 pages with very few pictures.  They cannot be a collection of short stories nor can they be the basis of a movie (for example, no Harry Potter books).  The student is to show me the book, and I will note if it's approved by initialing a Book Report Form which the student will then complete for that book.  Book reports are to be turned in as completed.  Only one of the book reports for a trimester can be turned in and accepted on the very last day they are due.  It is recommended that a student brings me the book before reading it to assure that it will be approved for a book report; otherwise, your child may have spent time reading a book for which a book report cannot be written.

For this 1st trimester, there will be 2 book reports due by November 7th -- 1 written and 1 oral. The form which I approve will be the same for both books; however, for the written book report, the students must neatly write their answers using complete sentences.  For the oral book report, students may just neatly write notes to which they can refer while presenting their oral book report to the class.  Students should practice this oral presentation at home before speaking in front of their classmates.  Books read since the beginning of the school year may be brought to me for approval for this 1st term.

For the 2nd trimester, there will be 3 book reports due by February 21st -- 1 written, 1 oral, and 1 booklet.  As we did last term, the form for the written and oral book reports will be the same for both books.  For the booklet report, the students will create a short booklet using the form I initial once that third book is approved.  On the title page, the students are to draw and color (not using markers) a scene depicting a part of the story.  Then, they are to follow the directions on the form to write (using complete sentences) about the story's setting, the appearance and personality of one character, and a summary of the story.  The 3 books with their reports may be done in any order as long as all 3 are completed and turned in by February 21st. Remember, book reports are to be turned in as they are completed and only 1 of the 3 reports will be accepted on the due date, February 21st.

For the 3rd trimester, 3 book reports will be due by Thursday, May 17th -- 1 written, 1 oral, and 1 as an interview of a main character in the book.  The forms for the written and oral book reports are as before.  For the interview, the students will create their own questions for the character and give the responses which would fit the role and personality of that main character. Questions and responses are to be written using complete sentences that are well-phrased, well-constructed, and well-thought out.  Book reports are to be turned in as they are completed.  Only one of the three book reports will be accepted on the due date of May 17th.  No books will be approved after Friday, May 11th to give students sufficient time to read and prepare a well-written report.

SOCIAL STUDIES PROJECT -- NATIVE AMERICANS

Students have chosen a Native American nation and have received a fact sheet for recording their research that will be used as the basis for a one-page essay.  I have borrowed books from my local library that provide information on each nation.  These are to be used by the students in school -- they may not be taken home.  There will be school time allotted in class, in the library, and in the computer lab to do research.  Students are also expected to work on this project at home and are encouraged to use the resources there or at the public library.  A picture of a traditional dwelling for their nation will be printed during computer class.  It will become part of a poster each student will draw of their nation's traditional dwelling in its typical environment.  I will provide the paper for the posters. Each student will give an oral presentation discussing the topics on the fact sheet and then the posters with their essays (answers to every topic on the fact sheet must be included, it is to be at least one side of a page, written in the student's own printing -- not typed) will be put on display in the hallway for everyone to see and enjoy.  The due date for the poster and completed essay will be Monday, November 21st with the oral presentations beginning that day.

SCIENCE PROJECT -- THE LIFE CYCLE OF AN ANIMAL

UPCOMING SCIENCE PROJECT:

Animal life cycle projects will be due on Wednesday, October 5th.  The students have chosen an animal to research and have been given a fact sheet to complete with information about their chosen animal.

During the weeks of September 12th and 19th,they will be given computer time and library time to gather information and print pictures.  They will have classroom time in which to find pictures from old National Geographic Magazines that I have provided.  The students can also neatly draw and color their own pictures or choose pictures and obtain information about their animal from other sources at home.

A large piece of construction paper will be given to each student for making their own poster which should be entitled The Life Cycle of (The Name of Their Animal) at the top (the poster is to be done horizontally).  The poster is to contain3 to 5 pictures (depending on the type of animal) depicting the life stages of that animal (for example -- birth, young, adolescent, adult, adult with their own newborns).  The pictures should be labeled and in the proper order forming a circle representing the life cycle.  The picture printed during our computer class is to be pasted in the center of the circle that forms the life cycle.  The information the students have learned from the fact sheet is to be written on white paper (not the construction paper for the poster) and pasted onto the construction paper outside the circle forming the life cycle in a manner similar to the balloon sin a cartoon.  These can be cut in any shape the student chooses, but the information must be neatly written in their own handwriting -- not typed.  There will be class time available for the students to work on their projects, so I can guide them as they go along.

The finished posters will be the basis for an oral presentation before the class on the life cycle of their animal.  Please have your child practice at home for fluency before October 5th.  After the presentations, their work will be proudly displayed in our hallway.

If you would like to see a sample of completed science project poster for students in Room 108, please send me an e-mail at my St. Barnabas account (stbteacher108@yahoo.com), and I will forward one to you as an attachment.  Unfortunately, it is too large to fit into School Notes. Because of its size, please allow time for the attachment to appear on your screen after you download it.  Thank you.
