![]() Current events at the RtI Schools in Rowan County: RtI Schools for 2010-2011 school year: Faith Elementary Landis Elementary, and Millbridge Elementary What is RtI? Responsiveness to Instruction (RtI) is an educational initiative to aid students using data-based decision-making, high quality instruction, and research-based interventions. A student with academic delays or behavior problems is given several research-based interventions. The student’s academic progress is monitored frequently to see if those interventions are sufficient. The interventions are modified based on ongoing data collection/analysis. RTI allows schools to intervene early to meet the needs of struggling learners. RTI maps those specific instructional strategies found to benefit a particular student. Information used is conveyed more easily to parents/teachers than traditional assessments. Currently in the Rowan Salisbury School System: Granite Quarry Elementary and Overton Elementary are in their 4th year of implementation. Knollwood, Hurley and Rockwell are beginning their first year of training. Universal Screenings of entire school will be conducted in the Fall, Winter, Spring assessing Early Literacy, Early Numeracy, Reading, Writing, Math. Here's what teachers and administrators are saying about RtI at their schools: "I like that RtI is a collaborative process which involves data based decisions. This process allows us to provide interventions early and thus target the identified needs of our struggling students. Through this kind of intense individual or small group instruction, there's a high likelihood that we can see student achievement and success which is always the ultimate goal!" Jennifer Sheppard, Title I Facilitator at Overton Elementary "Even though RtI can be a little tedious with paperwork, it is an awesome system! There is absolutely no way a child could be "Left Behind" with this program. There's mounds of data to support your efforts in making sure that your students succeed." Casie Woods, 5th grade teacher Rockwell Elementary School "After some initial growing pains, RtI is now successfully in place at our school. I believe our students' academic needs are being better met than they were previously. The long term success of at risk children at our school has been greatly improved because of the implementation of RtI." Holly Grant, 1st grade teacher at Overton Elementary School "I think RtI has made a world of difference in our school this year. I've seen students who were struggling at the beginning of the year now able to do on-grade level work. It catches those students who in the past have always fallen "between the cracks." Donna Trick, Curriculum Coach at Rockwell Elementary "When I came to Overton, I was excited about the possibility of working in a school that was using the RtI model to serve its students. I soon came to see that it required a lot of work and dedication from all of the staff and from the students. However, I have seen students improving in their reading and math from the intense interventions being utilized. Students aren't left on their own with the struggle to learn if they do not qualify for services, they are still helped in one of the tiers." Vickie Grubb, EC Teacher at Overton Elementary School "Before RTI was implemented at our school I had served on the Assistance Team, much as I serve on the RTI Team now. The difference is striking:) RTI's scientific approach makes the process run more smoothly for all parties considered. It takes the "stab in the dark" feeling out of serving our students who are struggling.
