Welcome to Fourth Grade!
We are very excited about this 2009-2010 school year.  We hope this will give you information and updates of what is happening in our classrooms.

Mrs. Martin's Marvelous
Reading and Spelling
We are reading stories that focus on the theme "journeys."  We are also doing centers and lessons that focus on reading comprehension and word usage.  Reading tests will be given each Friday.
A.R. has been discontinued at Rockwell.  However, the fourth grade is still doing a reading program.  Book Adventure is a program similar to A.R.  Students still take tests on the computer, only now it is a website (www.bookadventure.org).  Students who are in the Comets group need 800 points (individually), students who are in the Astros group need 1200 points, and students who are in the Rockets group need 2000 points.  Students have until the end of the nine weeks to achieve this goal.  The reward for this nine weeks will be a popcorn and movie party.
Spelling words will be given out each Friday.  Your child is responsible for turning in 3 different spelling contracts on Thursday.  The spelling test is also on Thursday.

Mrs. Harrill's Happening
Mathematics

We are ready for one of the biggest units we do in fourth grade- fractions and decimals.  Kids seem to really struggle with fractions and decimals.  These deal with amounts less than one.

Don't forget to visit my School Notes page.  You will find all kinds of links to math sites where children can practice the skills we have been working on in class.

Look for the Week by Week Essentials to come home on Monday.  This is a sheet that will be given most weeks on Monday and must be turned in by Friday.  Some of the problems are challenging.  I am looking to see that each student attempts to work the problems.  All work must be shown.

Mrs. Thompson's Terrific
Science, Social Studies, and Writing
In science we are studying animal adaptation and behavior.  The students will be completing a research paper on an animal of their choice.  We are doing animal centers this Monday and Wednesday.  Thursday and Friday the students will be in the computer lab researching for their animal project.  The animal research project can be worked on at home and needs to be completed by the beginning of October.
In Writing, the students will be starting to write a research paper.  The research paper is a county writing assessment.  Please remember to turn in your composition book if you have not done so.

Please make sure you are signing your child's planner nightly.  This is also a great way for us to communicate.  If your child receives a number, it will be listed as the bottom of that day in the planner.  We may jot you notes if we have information for you.  If you have comments or questions, please write us a note in the planner, and we will try to respond as soon as possible.

Homework is a very important part of your child's education.  We do not like to give too much homework, but some is necessary to insure students are practicing and understanding what they have learned.  Any homework that your child has is an extension of what has already been taught.  It will be something your child should be able to complete independently.  Please contact us if your child is struggling with the amount or difficulty of homework assigned.
