SPECIAL KID PAK CERTIFICATES will presented to those students who completed and returned all of the homework for October and November.  Keep up the good work!

Here is a new fun place I found to practice addition:

http://www.dositey.com/2008/addsub/addex1.htm  Try it out for fun.

DAILY FOLDERS; We believe schools and families are partners who work together to help students grow. Daily checking of the student's Daily Take Home Folder, and backpack is the quickest way to keep current with school activities and expectations.   Some other helpful school hints and ideas can be found at www.pta.org/

P.T.A.: See the Crownhill School Calendar for up to date meetings and times at:  http://www.crownhillpta.org/

To leave IMPORTANT MESSAGES, please phone the school office at 360.473.4200.  Children start classes at 9:05 A.M.  I check my email before school at about 8:30 A.M. and after school at 3:50 P.M.  Phone calls to the room after 9 A.M. will most likely be answered by the voice mail system.  So, please contact the office for reported absences and, or changes in plans.

General Old Items:

Popcorn is 50 cents a bag.  P.T.A. sells it every two weeks on Friday.

FIELD TRIPS need much advance preparation.  It is not too early to prepare for field trip help or for classroom help by filling out the special Bremerton School District forms found in our school office.  It takes about two weeks for the required background checks to be precessed..

Math: Our new math program is called MATH CONNECTS and it is off to a good start. At home math fact practice is essential for successful math work.  Keep up the great job of doing the flash card homework.  It is really helping.

Writing: Writing is a daily skill used in almost every lesson every day.  Content is most important, but the writing conventions are important too. CUPS stands for C= Capital letters where they belong, U = Usage of English grammar. P = Penmanship for clear and legible writing. S = accurate spelling at the grade level.

Social Studies: Salt Dough Land Form Relief Maps will be created as one part of our Social Studies Unit on Maps and Globes. Communites and Native American Social Studies are two other units of study in second grade.

Science: Three FOSS Science Kits relating to Balance and Motion, Rocks, and Plants will be utilized this year.

Technology: Computer skills are taught almost weekly. And last year we were able to experiment with an electronic student response system the children and I refered to as "the Clickers."  We might be able to use them again this year.

Birthdays: Our class looks forward to celebrating each child's birthday.  You may send a lunch time treat (cupcakes, cookies, donuts, ets.) on a special day of your choice.  Please just let me know so that I can plan for it.  We can celebrate with classmates even when birthdays fall on vacation or week-end days. Donating a book to the Classroom Library is another and long lasting way to celebrate.  Inside the book cover we place a note letting the reader know the book is a Gift Book In Honor of ......'s birthday.

Student of the Week: During the year, starting in October, a Student of The Week form will come home with your individual student to help plan a mini-presentation for classmates.  If you have photos that can be shared (and returned to you) the students and other classroom visitiors enjoy them immensely.

Homework:  Homework packets provide vital practice with all of the skills expected in Second Grade.  Almost every week on Friday (or the last day of each school week) your child will bring his or her homework for the week.   All of the homework is most often due back on the following week on the next Friday.  Some exceptions are around the holidays or the conference weeks.  Homework is practice time.  It should not be stressful nor take too much time.  Reading for 20 minutes a day can be done in two 10 minute sessions.  Math practice can be divided up into short sessions.  Games are a great way to get in math practice.

Reading Homework: A large part of your child's homework each week is reading.  Please read with your child at least 20 minutes a day for 5 days each week.   Reading is my major emphasis for homework. A Reading Log page will come home for you and for me to use to keep track.

Questions?, Concerns? Ideas?

When you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call me at 473.4266 to leave a message in my voice box.   You may also email me karin.black@bsd.wednet.edu/

Please do not email or phone in URGENT MESSAGES such as, "Tell Jane not to go home on the bus today."  For safety and efficiency all urgent messages need to go through the office, otherwise I won't get the message.  I am unable to check my email or phone voice messages during the school day. After school is another way to come in to talk.  Before school I am often in various teacher meetings in the building.  After school is the best time to meet in person.

Report Cards: Formal Report Cards are prepared three times each year. Numbers 4, 3, 2 and 1 are used.  Goal Setting Conferences in October are when report cards are explained.  All students can become "proficient" and earn 3's with effort over time.  Students have the whole year to grow and make improvements.  Students set goals and work to meet their goals with the support of families and school staff.

After School Tutoring: I have been and will continue to be available to work after the normal school day for parents, students, families who need extra support.  To do this a plan and contract is established first.  Families need to provide transportation home.  These after school tutoring sessions are only 20 to 25 minutes long one day per week.

Reminders for high achievement:

  • Read every day.
  • Keep practicing school skills at home.  Playing games is great practice.
  • For the best results, keep daily practice sessions short and pleasant. Practice with games as much as possible.
  • Click on the www links below to see the most recent Grade Level Expectations in Washington state = State Standards www.k12.wa.us/
  • Did you know there are many WASL tests to be taken before High School?  You can find more WASL information at www.k12.wa.us
  • Reading:  The public library has lists of grade level books for all grades.  Re-reading the same story several times is wonderful practice. Reading song lyrics is great too.  The Public Library has books on tape and DVD' s, and Videos also. On the World Wide Web try out www.starfall.com   Starfall has many short, creative, and fun reading practice opportunities.  LPlease let me know if you enjoy using this web site.

You can keep in touch with the Pacific Science Center events in Seattle at http://pacificsciencecenter.org

Games, Games, Games.  Play as many learning games as possible to practice skills.  You can make games at home to play for fun.  Flatten a cereal box or a cracker box to use as a sturdy gameboard.  Kids LOVE to make up their own boards and games.  Caps from soap or beverage containers can be used for game board place markers.  With a little glue or tape junk mail images can provide pictures for the game board.

At school our focus is on learning.  After school try asking your child, "What was one new thing that you learned today?"  Help your child to recall one especially happy moment in his or her day.  It is always fun for children to share with family members and with friends.

Remember: Parents are the first and the best teachers of their children.

Teachers can help, but no one can replace loving families.
