Reading, Grade 1: This week we will be reading the phonics story, Jordan Makes a New Friend; the selection story, Ice-Cold Birthday; and the phonic reader Fox and Stork. The new words for this week are: before, cold, full, off, would, write. Some of the skills associated with these stories are: r- controlledd -or; inflected endings -s, -ed, -ing; theme; exclamations; and compound words. The students will be tested in identifying the words presented in Unit 6 on Wednesday, and the selection test for Ice-Cold Birthday will be on Thursday. Please return the 5/24 reading log on Thursday. Reading, Grade 2: This week we will be reading Chapters 5-8 in Angels Don't Know Karate. The students will work with the new vocabulary by drawing illustrations or writing sentences for the new words. Please review the vocabulary words already presented in the novel as well as help the students to master these new words. There will be a quiz on Chapters 6-8 on Thursday. Please return the 5/24 reading log on Thursday. Reading, Grade 3: This week we will be reading a short passage, On the Train, the selection story, Mailing May, and the phonics reader, The Brave Little Tailor. The skill associated with this story is setting (time and place of a story). The new words for this week are: bundled, carted, conductor, label, mailing, station, chugged, flabbergasted, permissible, postal. Some of the skills associated with this story are: setting; using just enough letters; syllabication; and making judgments and character. The vocabulary test will be on Wednesday and the selection test on Thursday. Please return the 5/24 reading log on Thursday. Math, Grade 1: This week we will be understanding time (before and after); elapsed time (in both hours and minutes); learning how to measure how much a container holds; interpreting a line plot. We will also be logging onto the website www.multiplication.com to strengthen multiplication skills. We will continue to work on second grade math objectives in Accelerated Math. There is no quiz scheduled for this week. Math, Grade 4: This week the students will learn how to convert fractions into decimals and add and subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators. The students will also continue to work on mastering fourth grade math objectives as they work in their Accelerated Math folders. |
