Pronunciation Guide

Vowels



Vowels in Spanish are pronounced more quickly and cleanly than vowels in English.



A- "ah" as in "father"

E- "a" as in "ate"

I- "ee" as in "greet"

O- "o" as in "obey"

U- "oo" as in "boot"





Consonants (in abc order)



B- "b" as in "bat" (pronounced more softly when between vowels: trysaying "abundancia")

C- "c" as in "color" before A, O, or U

"c" as in "city" before E or I

D- "d" as in "dog" (pronounced more like a faint "th" when betweenvowels): try saying "actividades"



G- "g" as in "goat" before A, O, and U

sounds like "h" as in "hat" before E and I

H- is silent! Say "otel" instead of "hotel"

J- "h" as in "hi"

L- "l" as in "like"

LL- "y" as in "yes"



Ñ- "ny" as in "onion" (onyon)

R- usually "flipped", making it sound similar to the "d" in"ladder"

RR- rolled or trilled- try it at home and be patient- it can takemore than a year to get it!



Y- pronounced as in English ("yet") except when seen alone- then itsounds like "EE"

Z- pronounced like "s" as in "seventh"

QUE- "ke" as in "kept"

QUI- "kee" as in "keep"

GUE- "gue" as in "guest"
