WELCOME TO SECOND GRADE
I am pleased to welcome you to second grade at Saint John the Apostle School. Our class has 16 students and our room, 2-15, is located on the second floor of the main building. Upon arriving each morning, students should report to the gym on the lower level. If a student is late, he needs to obtain a pass from the main office before coming to the classroom. Brown interoffice envelopes are used to send information from the school office to the home. They are given to the oldest child in each family registered in the school. Please empty the contents and return the envelope to the school the next day. Each student will occasionally bring home notices distributed in the classroom in his "take home" folder. Each morning at approximately 10 o'clock students have time to eat a small snack. Please provide something nutritious and easy for you child to eat. Because of allergies children are encouraged to eat only what is provided for them by parents. During the school year, children also bring in treats to share with classmates for birthday celebrations. If you child has food restrictions, please advise me or provide an alternate treat for those occasions. In second grade, students record homework assignments in a planner. Time is allocated each day for students to copy the assignments from the chalkboard. If there is a question about a particular assignment, please skip it and the student can verify with me the next day. You can use the planner to communicate brief messages with me, such as, doctor's appointments, conference requests, or a change in who will pick up your child at dismissal. You can also send an email through the school website. Textbooks are costly and softcover books are flimsy, so it is requested that all student books be covered. Booksocks, brown paper, or wallpaper are all acceptable. Each week, topics taught and discussed in class will be posted on the SchoolNotes page. The student planner will list the specific homework assignments for each night. Please LABEL all sweaters and sweatshirts with your child's name. To ensure your child is comfortable in class and learning appropriately, please keep in touch. Sincerely, Irene Abline iabline@sjanj.org
