Welcome to Mrs. Lail's English II class. I am teaching English II during first, second, and third block this semester.. I am working with Mrs. Wetmore and Ms. Wansley during first and second block. My planning is 4th block. If you need to reach me, you can call the school at 704-278-9233 ex. 209, email, or send a message on this website!

Purpose of the Class: English II focuses on literature that has been written in different parts of the world. In order to study these works, we will discuss and study different cultures. Students will read a variety of genres including novels, plays, short stories, and plays. Activities such as papers, discussion, and projects will be completed with each piece of literature. Also in English II, we will focus on vocabulary through our literature program called Word Skills. Students will need to keep-up with their Word Skills book or binder, and study each week for quizzes.

Report Cards for 1st semester will be sent home February 3rd. The first progress report for the second nine weeks will be given out on February 13th during Open House.

  • To begin our study of World Literature, the class will read three types of stories: myths, fairytales, and epics. We will read three selections including "The Great Flood", "The Juniper Tree", and "The Epic of Gilgamesh". Students will be asked to read all three stories and respond in several ways. We will answer discussion questions, create projects, and make comic timelines to aid students in understanding. I believe that students learn best when they view literature in many ways, including with their hands; therefore, I do many projects in class. During this section, students will do three separate projects. These can be done alone, in partners, or in groups. If students do not complete the project during the time allotted, it will need to be finished at home.
  •  We are also working on writing. Students were given a writing assignment on day #1. They were asked to write about two major events that have impacted their lives. Now a specific assignment has been given in which they are to break down one of their life events into separate paragraphs. We will work on this first paper slowly, and students will turn in at least one draft before they turn in a final copy.

  •  During the semester, students need to work on a major project entitled "The Independent Reading Project". We will go to the library Friday, February 3rd to get novels so students can begin. They are asked to read one novel of their choosing, write a report, and create something that represents that book. They will have nine weeks to complete this. These projects will be presented to the class at the end of each nine weeks.
