Awards Assembly:  June 8, 2011

Last day of school for students:  June 10, 2011

Practice for EOG'S

Our class will begin actively preparing for the North Carolina End of Grade tests very shortly.  For more practice, you can visit the North Carolina Department of Instruction website.  Go to Accountability Services for more information regarding state testing as well as a look at released state tests.  This will allow you to see the kind of passages and questions your child will be taking in May.    The website is    http://www.ncpublicschools.org/accountability/testing/eog/

Homework

Students have homework Monday through Thursday.  They usually have a math assignment, a reading assignment, and a spelling assignment. In addition, students are responsible for nightly reading.  They should be recording what they read on a regular basis.  A three sentence summary of what they have read should accompany the title, author, and number of minutes read.   Multiplication flashcards will resume on Tuesday, January 18, 2011.  Please make sure you check your child’s agenda daily.

Science:

Human Body

Our next unit of science is going to focus on the human body.  We study two specific systems:  the skeletal system and the muscular system.  Students will learn how these two systems work together to make our body move.  One great website to reinforce concepts taught in class is http://kidshealth.org/kid/htbw/htbw_main_page.html.  Please take the time to check it out.

Fluency

Fluency is one of the five areas of reading instruction.  It is the rate of speed by which someone reads.  Fluency should be smooth and not choppy.  You can help improve your child’s fluency by reading with them on a nightly basis.  Tape record your child reading and let them hear themselves.  Your child will want to do their very best over the tape.  You can also tape yourself reading so that your child has a good example.

Math:  Multiplication

We have finished the multiplication chapters in our math book.  Right now in math class, we are focusing on division and learning that this operation is the inverse operation of multiplication.   We will continue to have multiplication quizzes each week so that the children will successfully memorize their facts.  There are websites that can help your children practice their facts.  These websites include www.multiplication.com  and www.math-drills.com.  The first site has a multitude of games to play and practice.  The second site offers a host of printable quizzes in multiplication and in other operations.

      Overton Cares

Overton Cares is a new bully prevention program being implemented this year.  Students will participate in weekly meetings to talk about issues such as bullying and bringing a sense of community and unity to Overton.  We are very excited about this program and want the students to feel safe and comfortable while learning at Overton.  Please talk to your child about preventing bullying.

Quote of the Week

Acceleration

Your child took part in 3rd grade acceleration this morning at school.  Acceleration focuses on reading and math skills.  Students are placed in small groups which rotate to enhance student achievement in reading and math.  Your child is exposed to reading and math games, more individualized instruction, and use of technology during Acceleration.   We do try to review skills and concepts previously introduced and taught so that the children are getting constant reinforcement in the areas of the curriculum they need most.   Acceleration happens periodically throughout the year.  Fourth and fifth graders also have acceleration days to help prepare them for the End of Grade tests.

Multiplication

We are almost finished with the subtraction topics in our math series.   We will begin multiplication very soon.  It is very important that multiplication facts be studied and practiced on a daily and consistent basis.  The class will be having timed quizzes on their facts.  They will be responsible for learning a times table in a week’s time span.  We will start with the 0 times table and work our way up to the 12 times table.  During this time, I will provide envelopes with flashcards that the children make in class to help them study and practice.  I ask that you sign and date the envelope saying that you have studied the facts along with your child.    Thank you for your cooperation.

Healthy Fruits and Vegetables

On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays your child has been receiving a healthy snack in the mid morning.  Children have been introduced to plums, nectarines, carrots, broccoli, and apples.  The children look forward to this special treat each day.

Nightly Reading

This year, your child will be assigned twenty minutes of nightly reading each day. Your child will then be required to write a three sentence summary of the book or chapter they have read.  I also ask that a parent signature accompany the summary indicating the monitoring of this assignment.  In class, we will also be completing projects that involve higher order thinking skills and independent reading.
