Welcome to third grade! We are off to a great start in Mrs. Diskin's class. My new students and parents have made this happen!
Please check your child's supplies over this weekend . We are asking that each child have:
pencils 5 composition books
crayons /colored pencils 6 pocket folders
scissors
glue sticks
Reading: We are in our second theme, Celebrating Traditions. Our skills include author's viewpoint, categorizing, noting details, and main idea.
A comprehension sheet will be coming home each week to allow practice of each skill. It will always be due on Friday. Thank you for taking this opportunity to read with your child. Please sign the sheet to show you have worked together.
Grammar skills are common and proper nouns. Following will be singular and plural nouns. Writing super sentences is what we are still striving for all year, so we will get started right away! If sentences are given for spelling/language homework, please help in the writing of these. It will reinforce the lessons in class and make for better writing!
Spelling Assignments will be given each night, but will stay similar throughout the term. If spelling is not given, it will be noted in the agenda. Please assist your child with completeness and accuracy of these assignments. As mentioned in the beginning of the year, nightly assignments are checked each day. Please check for a stamp or check to indicate that your child has been given credit for his/her work. Tests will be given each Friday.
Math:
Now that addition is behind us, we are working on subtraction. Please practice facts with your child if he/she is still using fingers or counting out on paper.
Our chapter tests will be noted in the agenda. They will come home for signatures, or be put in the Friday folders. We visit the computer lab on C days to take our progress test, and then to explore math websites. We have now begun First in Math which the kids just love! Ask them to see their password card. If you have internet access, it is a wonderful opportunity to practice math drills at home.
Benchmark tests will be given at intervals throughout the year. These results are used to drive instruction, and are not used for grading purposes, but if you would like to discuss these results, feel free to contact me.
Some math reminders: Homework is given each night, and your help is appreciated. Again, feel free to let me know of any questions you might have as they arise.
In Science we will begin a unit on magnets. In Social Studies we will discuss rules.
Announcing our SUPER KIDS:
Wa Nazia Moore, Mitchell Adams, Ehyrica Roche and Jeremy Cope. Stay tuned for future winners!
General, important information:
If you could not attend Back to School night on the 2nd, please feel free to ask for the handout. Just send a note with your child and I will send one home.
*Be sure to review Friday folders and sign each week. Thanks to all of you who are doing this.
** Binder folders can get full pretty quickly, so please help your child in cleaning them out weekly. Unless it says 'keep', you are free to take it out. All homework that has been gone over in class should be obviously "checked". If you want to check before disgarding, feel free to send me a note on the particular item and I will confirm for you. Vocabulary baggies are to be kept in the RE/LA folder. Words should be cleaned out each Friday.
*** Look for upcoming events in the Mustang Messenger. Be sure to check for upcoming notes on this. Any special classroom notes will be written in the agenda. **** A brochure explaining our schoolwide behavior system , PBIS, has gone home. This should help with your understanding of our new discipline system throughout WIS. Please note that there are changes from last year. Merits are earned when positive behavior is consistently shown. Be sure to discuss with your child how he/she is doing with these merits. If you should have any questions, feel free to contact me.
